Homework

Homework Policies:
There will be no homework packets for this week Jan. 6-8;however, your child
will need to take some ThinkLink computer tests at home. See the directions
below: If you need any help, call me at home at 351-7333, or email me and I
will guide you through this.

First, go to my Mrs. Busing's links page and click on Think Link practice
tests icon. If you can't login there, go to
http://assignments.discoveryeducation.com/ and you will see a red box to type
in a code and then your child's name. Select one code from below and type it
in, and it will allow your child to take a test to prepare for the SAT test
in April. These computer tests will not count as grades, but I will be able
to see what tests your child has taken as well as his/her scores. After each
question, your child will get to play a 30 second quick game. This makes the
tests more fun and most students usually enjoy these tests. If you want your
child to process the test at a quicker pace, your child can click the
continue box to skip the game part. Your child needs to do at least 2 tests
at home each week in order to complete the tests by the end of February. In
the computer lab on Fridays, your child will take these tests if his/her
tests have not been taken at home for the week. IF your child is caught up,
he or she will be allowed to do other fun activities in the lab instead of
these tests. In order to not get confused on what tests your child needs to
take, please start in the left column of tests and go down in order, then do
the tests in the right column next.

This week your child HAS a homework packet stapled together. It
HAS a top sheet with 20 spelling words and 5-7 vocabulary
words. During this week at home, please call out the spelling words to
your child to ensure that he/she knows how to spell the 20 spelling words.
The easier words are sight words which students must know how to spell/read.

The 5-7 vocabulary words will be the bonus words and will also be
called out on the spelling test. 1 pt. will be added to the final grade for
each voc. bonus word spelled correctly. If the voc. words are listed in the
spelling list as words for the regular spelling test, then those WILL NOT
be counted as extra credit.

Your child ALSO needs to know the definitions of the vocabulary words.
The vocabulary test will be multiple choice and will count as a separate
grade from the reading comprehension test.

A Fluency sheet will be included each week. Your child must read it to you
orally each night. You will record the number of words read in 1 minute.
If your child makes errors in the reading, please write the words on the
back of the sheet and help him decode them with you AFTER the reading. If
your child doesn't know a word, please correct him quickly within 3 seconds
but let him keep reading, then after the reading, let him read the words
with you. You can time your child several times and record the best time
each night. YOUR CHILD MAY BE ASKED TO READ THIS ALOUD TO ME FOR A FLUENCY
GRADE IN READING.

Your child will also be taking a reading comprehension test on the weekly
Imagine It story each Friday for a grade.
Your child HAS RECEIVED an Imagine it student password where he/she
can log onto the computer and read the story online and play games with the
Imagine It vocabulary and spelling words each week. It was sent home on a
green piece of construction paper last week. On this web site, your child
can access the student reader and hear the story read from the computer.
Your child can also record himself reading aloud by using the eFluency icon.
You will need to buy a headset with a microphone, if your child wants to
record his voice.

Every other week, your child will have a DOL quiz on the practice DOL
sheets sent home that same week in his/her graded papers. Please study these
sentences with your child. Each day at school, we will be discussing the
errors and correcting them. Your child will be given a classwork grade each
week based on how accurately he/she corrected the errors. If your child
listens, he or she will always make a 100 on this grade. I usually circle
the day that I am grading for that week.

Your child will also need to be reading each night for 30 minutes and
recording the title of book in the Chestnut Grove calendar planner squares
each night for at least 4 nights per week. The planner will stay in the 1"
homework binder and in your child's backpack AT ALL TIMES!!!It will be
checked for a grade on Fridays PERIODICALLY to ensure that your child is
reading and recording books read. Only record books in the planner that your
child reads aloud to you or reads silently with your supervision.
