* FLUENCY refers to the ability to name letters quickly - a skill that is
needs for beginning reading.

** Things to Help Your Child with FLUENCY **
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- Play with letter flash cards by having your child name them as quickly
    as possible.
-- Make a line of letters (8-10) and have your child point to each one and
name it. After doing this one time, have them do it again, only faster.
Then try it again even faster. Make a new line of letters and continue.
-- Afer reading a story have your child name all the letters in a KEY word
from the story. After naming the letters, have them try to do it again,
    only faster.
-- Beat the timer - set a timer for a minute. Using flash cards, let your
child name as many as he can before the timer goes off. Repeat, trying
    to BEAT the timer!
-- Students will be asked to name as many letters as they can in one
minute. The ultimate goal is to be able to read over 60 letters per
    minute.
-- Students will be shown pictures and told what the pictures are. Then
they will be asked to point to the picture that begins with a specific
sound. This assessment will show students ability to follow directions
and if they have a knowledge of beginning sounds in a word.

** Things to Help Your Child with LETTER NAMING and RECOGNITION **
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-- FLASH CARDS - Use the flash cards for naming the letter and giving
    the sound.
-- MEMORY GAME - Use flash cards, make one set of capital letters and one
set of lower case letters. When your child finds a match they
celebrate by making that letter sound.
-- "BOOM" Game - Place a set of flash cards into an empty can or box. Also
add several cards that say "BOOM". You and your child take turns
pulling out a card, naming it and making the letter sound. You get to
keep the cards you name correctly. If you pull out a "BOOM" card you
have to put all your cards back in!
-- MAGNETICS - Use magnetic letters and a cookie sheet. You can name a
letter and have your child find it. When they have found the letter
they let you know by making the sound.
-- WIPE-OFF BOARDS - You can let your child practice writing letters and
making the sound as they write them. You can make a sound and have your
    child write the letter.
-- LETTER POSTERS - Choose a letter and write it at the top of a piece of
construction paper. Give your child an old magazine and have them cut
out as many pictures as they can that begin with that letter. You can
help them write the words under the pictures and they can cicle the
letter. Work on several pages and make a book!
 -- I SPY - LETTER-SOUND - Play a game of I Spy. I spy something that
begins with "buh, buh, buh" (B). Continue for several letter sounds.
Great for in the car or while waiting for appointments!
-- LOADED - Play "My Ship is Loaded With..." Think of a sound and say, "My
ship is loaded with things that begin with 'puh'. Your child tries
loading your ship with as many things that begin with the letter 'P' as
he can. Great for in the car or while waiting for appointments!
