How much time should my child spend reading?

First graders should read both orally and silently at school and
at home on a daily basis. You should plan to spend at least
twenty minutes each night listening to your child read. Reading
fluency is increased through this process. Please listen and read
with your child every day. Also, when you are reading, try to act
as a model for your children. Help them to recognize
and use strategies that you use as a reader (segmenting words, re-
reading for comprehension, etc). Encourage your children to read
a variety of texts and discuss the reading with your child.
Always strive to ask questions related to comprehension and
work to promote understanding of the text.

Additionally, please work to share the joy of reading with your
children. I firmly believe that reading is a subject that unlocks
success in other areas of academics.

When may I conference with the teacher?

You may meet with me during my planning (P.E) time, which is from
1:30-2:15 daily by calling in advance. The call is just to assure
that I will be in the room available for you and not in a
meeting. If you have a concern please do not hesitate to contact
me via email, note, or personal meeting. Then, we can work out a
time that is convenient for the both of us.

May I work as a volunteer in the Zebra room?

Volunteers are always welcome! Volunteers will be working with
individual students on specific reading skills in the room. The
Zebra class welcomes volunteers from 8:15-9:30 AM to work
specifically on reading skills. If you feel that this time would
fit in your schedule ... please let me know and I will place you
on the schedule.

Also, if this time does not work for you we would certainly
welcome readers
to share during brain break and special occasions. Please let me
know
if/when you are available and we will work to find a time for
you!

One last opportunity ... we are always looking for helping hands
on big
projects (cutting, gluing, etc.), which can be done at home. If
these
flexible hours work better for you and you want to serve as a
volunteer in
this light ... let me know!

We work better together!

Can I send a special snack for my child's birthday?

Yes, please feel free to send in a snack for your child's
birthday. Remember to send in enough for us all and please pre-
cut the items so that the snack will be easier to distribute. It
might be a good idea to send in plates/cups if they are required.
We will share during our snack/recess time, which is from 9:45-
10:00.
