The Zebra Stripe

Phonics:
This week we will focus on the vowel digraphs ea and ee. Ea and ee follow the
that “when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and the
second is silent” So, both will make the long e sound like in treat and meet.
Additionally, we will look at contractions like I’m, she’s and he’ll. We will
have a dictation test on Friday.

Reading:
This week in reading we introduce a new author study with Eve Bunting. We
will use the book No Nap! to discuss questions. Good readers ask question
before they read, as they read and after they’ve finished reading. This helps
us to think about our story and make sense of what we read. We will also be
using some of Eve Bunting’s books to identify our new vocabulary words. From
the book Twinnies we will learn the following words: overwhelmed, peered,
rattled and contented.

Our story from the blue reader is “The Big Circle”. We will focus on fluency
(reading like we talk) and sequencing. Please read nightly with your child,
practice coordinating sight words in the blue homework folder as well as the
homework packet in the back pocket of your child’s homework folder. Work on
the packet during the week and return on Friday in the homework folder,
making sure to complete at least on page per night.

Writing:
Our writing unit is that of small stories. This week we will begin working
with writing partners and learn how to stretch out a moment to write all the
details. Remind your children that to be a good partner you have to:
Participate, Appreciate, Respect, Team Effort, Never Rude, Extremely Good
Listeners, and Real Suggestions.

Math:
This week we will work with dimes to count by 10, learn to tell time by the
hour, count by 2s and work on subtracting zero facts. Please check the
homework folder and go over your child’s homework (side B) daily.

Science:
In correlation with our blue reader story we have been reading and discussing
communities. This week we will look at animal communities, particularly
dinosaurs. We will focus on scientific discoveries, facts, classification and
our own research!

Conversation Corner:
Talk with your child about thankfulness. As we continue into the month of
November, identify people in your lives that you are thankful for … start
