Homework

Read each night to your child and with your child. Follow along with your
finger as you read and let your child see the words you are reading. Later in
the year you will be able to listen to your child read!

I will send home homework periodically. Homework will help children
practice writing letters, reading sight words, reading books, writing
numbers, counting,
etc.

Have your child practice saying and writing their phone number and their
address.

Your child should be familiar with all their letters and sounds. Make sure
they can recognize each letter and be able to say the sound that goes along
with that letter.

Practice identifying beginning sounds in words. Ask your child, "What sound
do you hear at the beginning of the word cat?" /C/ or "What sound do you hear
at the beginning of the word paper?" /P/. This will begin preparing them for
their DIBELS testing in January and May.

Practice sight words such as my, a, the, I, said, your, you, that, this,
what, would, have, etc. Make sure they know that the reason these are called
sight words is because you know them by sight only and these are not words
that you can sound out. These are words you "just know"! :)

Practice identifying numbers 1-30 and counting 1-100. Practice writing the
numbers 1-30. It is very important to be able to count them but it is more
important to be about to identify the number when it is by itself.

Count sounds in words. Practice with your child each night counting words
with 2-5 sounds in them....Example: 2- pie, 3-tree, 4-gift, 5-strap

READ! READ! READ! And sign reading log each night.
