COURSE SYLLABUS FOR ESSENTIAL MATH

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Essential math focuses on basic operations involving decimals and percents, laws of exponents, adding and subtracting to determine elapsed time, and basic operations involving whole numbers and fractions.  Consumer related skills include reconciling bank statements and computing pay rates.  Additional content involves identifying basic functions and performing basic graphing skills.  Basic geometry skills include determining perimeter and area of various shapes and measuring angles. 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

1.      Use basic operations to solve problems involving decimals and percents.

2.      Simplify expressions containing natural number exponents by applying one or more of the laws of exponents.

3.      Reconcile bank statements.

4.      Use the basic operations of addition and subtraction to determine elapsed time.

5.      Calculate total salary for a given pay period.

6.      Plot coordinates on grids, graphs, and maps.

7.      Identify functions from information in tables, sets of ordered pairs, and mappings.

8.      Determine the distance between two points on a scale drawing or a map, using a ruler.

9.      Measure angles using a protractor.

10.  Find perimeter and area of triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms.

11.  Identify parts of a circle.

12.  Identify proportions as true or untrue.

13.  Identify mean, median, mode, and range of a given set of numbers.

14.  Find the probability of a simple event.

 

CLASS RULES:

1.      All school rules in the CHS handbook will apply in this classroom.

2.      Follow directions the first time they are given.

3.      CHS tardy policy will be followed.

4.      Bring all materials to class everyday and be ready to work.

5.      Students will only leave the room in emergencies.

 

MATERIALS:    

Each student will need the following materials:

1.      Wide rule paper

2.      Pencils only!  NO INK PENS!

3.      Binder, folder, or notebook

4.      Calculator

5.      Other materials may be added

 

GRADING:

1.      Grades are computed by the ratio (points earned/points possible).

2.      Make-up work should be completed within 3 days.

3.      When homework is assigned it will be due on the next day of school.

4.      Progress reports will be sent home every 3 weeks.

5.      Report cards will be sent home every 6 weeks.
