CULLMAN HIGH SCHOOLENGLISH 12 PI

2007-08 SYLLABUS - MRS. PUTMAN

 

GOALS & OBJECTIVES:  To improve student’s ability to think clearly, read effectively, write coherently, analyze logically, research successfully, and reflect regularly.  Course uses objectives for language and reading in the Alabama Course of Study: English Language Arts for 12th grade English and AL. High School Graduation Exam.

 

TEXTBOOKS:  Grammar and Language Workbook; Elements of Literature: Literature of Britain – Sixth Course; and Vocabulary Workshop – Level G.

 

NOVELS & SUPPLIES:  Must acquire copy of novel Night by Elie Wiesel for Trimester A. Supplies: a USB drive (no floppies), pencils, black ink pens, wide ruled paper in 3-ring binder, and colored pencils.

 

GRADING:  Homework / Daily Work grade 20%; Grammar tests, all Essays, and Literature tests 60%; and Vocabulary Tests 20% = Final grade.   Remember, all essays count double as major test grades (100 pts. each).

 

CLASSROOM POLICIES & RULES:   Any student needing accommodations or that has failing grades is urged to talk with me ASAP. Students are expected to follow CHS dress code, and academic conduct & attendance policy.  Students have up to 3 days to make up tests and homework missed when absent (unless serious illness).  Students are expected to listen & work during lesson, be prepared, respect others, and help keep classroom and school clean.

II. WRITING

A.      Various personal writing & Coat of Arms project

B.       Unit 14 – Composition - The Writing Process: Review Five Stages of Writing (307-319)

C.       Elements of sentence outline -- graphic organizers optional.

D.      Elements of MLA Format: parenthetical citations, Works Cited page, & essay presentation.

E.       Narrative Essay  with sentence outline – MLA format

F.       Literary Analysis Essay with sentence outline using documentation in MLA format

G.    Update Resume

 

III. LITERATURE

A.      Summer reading selection – Bleachers by John Grisham

B.       Anglo-Saxon time period (2-13)  -will watch The Epic Hero short video as intro

C.       Beowulf   (14-41) - will watch short Beowulf video after reading.

D.      Review Literary Terms

E.       Middle Ages time period (68-75)

F.       The Canterbury Tales – “The Nun’s Priest Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer  (84-86, 110-121)

G.       Sir Gawain & the Green Knight  (133-146)

H.      King Arthur legend & Le Morte Darthur  (147-155) - will watch short video about King Arthur & Camelot

I.         Holocaust time period - will watch If You Cried You Died short video as intro

J.        Novel Night by Elie Wiesel (will need to acquire copy)

D.      Persuasive Essay / Research Paper with sentence outline, using documentation - MLA format

E.       Process Essay with sentence outline – MLA format

F.    Update Resume  

 

III. LITERATURE

A.      Renaissance time period and The Globe Theater (166-186) – & watch short video on the Globe Theater.

B.       The life and career of William Shakespeare (241-253)

C.       Macbeth by William Shakespeare (255-334) - will watch Macbeth video after reading.

D.    Romantic time period (660-610)

E.    Novel Frankenstein by Mary W. Shelley (will need to acquire copy) -will watch Frankenstein video after             reading.

F.    Various poetry & sonnet selections
