COURSE SYLLABUS FOR ALGEBRA II WITH TRIG – HONORS

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This is an accelerated Algebra II with trig course designed for students interested in math competition.  Topics include solving equations, systems , polynomials, quadratic functions and inequalities.  Conic sections, sequences, probability and trigonometry are also covered.

 

PREREQUISITES:  High school geometry, teacher recommendation and an overall average of A.

 

COURSE  OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to perform the following mathematical operations:

1)      Solve linear, quadratic, absolute value, logarithmic and exponential equations.

2)      Graph lines, parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas and circles.

3)      Solve and graph linear and quadratic inequalities.

4)      Perform operations on matrices, and solve equations using matrices.

5)      Factor polynomials and find roots of polynomial equations.

6)      Perform basic operations on rational functions.

7)      Perform operations using natural and common logarithms.

8)      Know the formulas for arithmetic and geometric progression.

9)      Use Pascal’s triangle and the binomial theorem in problems.

10)   Prove sequences by mathematical induction.

11)    Use combination and permutation concepts in fundamental probability problems.

12)    Perform basic operations with complex numbers.

13)   Write the six trigonometric functions and use them in solving problems involving right triangles.

14)   Identify the graphs of the six trig functions.

15)   Use the law of sines and cosines to solve non-right triangles.

16)    Know formulas to find area of polygons.

17)   Be prepared for state written test in Algebra II by practicing several previous state tests.

 Know teacher-made packets of extra material when required.
