Welcome to Tenth Grade Honors English! As we begin a new trimester, I want to share with you some of the things expected of pupils in my class. By working together, we can make this a memorable time full of many learning experiences. 1. I shall expect all pupils to obey all school rules and behave as good citizens. A courteous attitude toward everyone is essential for a successful trimester. 2. Pupils must come to class with the essential tools to be used including a three-ring notebook, which will be an on-going “study guide” for any and all tests, even the final exam. Each pupil will be given a “calendar” of assignments for the English class. This should be placed in the notebook so that the pupil is always aware of assignments and activities. In the case of an absence, the pupil will know which assignments have been missed. 3. All assignments are due at the beginning of each class period. Assignments that are late will have a grade lower than one arriving on time. 4. When a pupil misses a class and has an excused absence, he/she will have three school days to make up the work. The pupil will schedule make-up work when he/she returns to school. The responsibility of taking the test(s) within three days lies with the pupil. Make-up work will be given at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings with Ms.. Allred. Pupils who do not make-up work on the scheduled morning will receive a zero for the test. 5. Good attendance is essential for success in this class. In fact, pupils with excessive absences risk failing. 6. The majority of the tests will be objective (multiple-choice, true-false, matching, etc.) Therefore, pupils should come to class with pencils for scan-tron answer sheets. When a test is returned, the pupil will record the grade in his/her notebook, thereby always knowing the status of the English grade. All tests will be filed for use in parent/teacher conferences that can be arranged by contacting the guidance office. 7. Required reading for the class will include THE PEARL, THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, WHEN THE LEGENDS DIE, and 1984 for Part One.. The major works for Part Two will be THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN, FAHRENHEIT 451, LORD OF THE FLIES, and JULIUS CAESAR (located in the literature book). Each pupil is responsible for obtaining a copy to read. He/she may buy or borrow one from an upperclassman or obtain one from the library. Pupils who cannot read or those who refuse to read will experience difficulty in this class. 8. It is most important that the pupil keep up with all assignments. With the pace that is expected in honors English, a pupil who is negligent in his/her work will experience difficulty. I have read the above information and understand the procedures to be used in Mrs. Williams’s class. ____________________________ ______________________________ Pupil’s Signature Parent’s/Guardian’s Signature |
