AP Summer Reading Assignment

Dear AP Students,

Welcome to AP U.S. History.  AP U.S. History is a challenging course that is meant to be the equivalent of a freshman college course. It is a two-trimester survey of American history that takes you on a journey from the age of exploration to the present. This is a large amount of material to cover in a short period of time, so you must be willing to devote a considerable amount of time to homework and study to be successful. Time management is a necessity for success.

This course is also intended to prepare you to take the AP U.S. History Exam in order to earn college credit.  It also can be taken as a Dual Enrollment class to receive college credit through Wallace State Community College.  Wallace will be registering students that want to take the class for credit the first week of each trimester during class.   You can get up to 6 semester hours of credit through Wallace for this class.

Due to the intense amount of material we need to cover in a relatively short period of time, it is necessary to have a summer assignment.  For the summer you need to purchase United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination, an Amsco Publication.  This can be purchased new directly from Amsco at http://www.efastcom.com/AMSCOPUB/control/product?categoryId=19&catCode=MAH listed as R785P US HISTORY AP 2ND REV or can be purchase new or used at Amazon.com and Deb's Bookstore here in Cullman.  If you do not have Internet access to purchase this book, please see me before school lets out for the summer.   Please take note of the following:

1.    You are to read the introduction and the first four chapters over the summer.

2.    You need to define and explain the historical significance (the who, what, when, where, and why it matters in history) for each item listed on the Key Names, Events, and Terms Lists at the end of the first four chapters.  These lists can be found on pages 13, 36, 54, and 70.  This will be due your first day of class and is worth 50 points.  No partial credit will be given.

3.    You will also take a quiz on this material the first day of class worth 50 points.

I look forward to a great year!

Sincerely,
