CAREER PREP SOCIAL STUDIES Mrs. Lori Andrews Email – landrews@cullmancats.net Topics To Be Covered In Part I1. Contrast effects of economic, geographic, social, and political conditions before and after European explorations of the 15th through 17th centuries on Europeans, American colonists, and indigenous Americans. 2. Compare various early English settlements and colonies on the basis of Economics, geography, culture, government, and Native American relations. 3. Trace the chronology of events leading to the American Revolution, Including the French and Indian War, the Stamp Act, the Boston Tea Party, the Intolerable Acts, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the publication of Common Sense, and the Declaration of Independence. 4. Describe the political system of the United States based on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. 5. Identify key cases that helped shape the United States Supreme Court, including Marbury v Mardison, McCulloch v Maryland, and Cherokee Nation v Georgia. 6. Describe relations of the United States with Britain and France from 1781 to 1823 including the XYZ Affair, the War of 1812, and the Monroe Doctrine. 7. Describe the development of a distinct culture with the United States Between the American Revolution and the Civil War, including the impact of the Second Great Awakening and writings of James Fenimore Cooper, Henry David Thoreau, and Edgar Allen Poe. Topics To Be Covered in Part II 1. Trace the development of efforts to abolish slavery prior to the Civil War. 2. Summarize major legislation and court decisions from 1800-1861 that led to increasing sectionalism, including the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Dred Scott Decision. 3. Discuss how the course, character, and effects of the Civil War influenced the United States. 4. Contrast congressional and presidential plans for Reconstruction, including African-American political participation. 5. Career Exploration and guidance will be addressed. 6. Participation in work-related activities within the school and out in the community. Classroom Rules and Expectations 1. Be on time and have appropriate materials each day. 2. Follow all school rules. 3. Show respect toward your teacher and classmates. 4. Talk only during appropriate times. 5. Food, drink and gum are NOT allowed in this class. 6. Have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!! Grades Grades in this class will be determined by the following 1. Classroom assignments 2. Homework 3. Test
Make-up Work Students will have 3 days to complete any missed assignments and/or tests. Considerations will be given if the student misses several days in a row. Materials 1. One 3-ring binder (1 inch) 2. Paper 3. Pens or Pencils (no red ink) Parents may feel free to contact me at school with any concerns. Email is usually quicker than phone calls. READING SYLLABUS Mrs. Lori Andrews Email – landrews@cullmancats.net This class is designed to increase reading skills for students on an individual basis. Topics to be covered: 1. Word Recognition 7. Main Idea 2. Oral Reading Skills 8. Fact/Opinion 3. Reading Fluency 9. Sequencing 4. Nonsense Words 10. Conclusions 5. Reading Comprehension 11. Context Clues 6. Critical Reading Skills Classroom Rules and Expectations: 1. Be on time and have appropriate materials each day. 2. Follow all school rules. 3. Show respect toward your teacher and classmates. 4. Talk only during and appropriate times and participate when asked. 5. Food and drinks cannot be consumed during class. 6. Have a POSITIVE attitude!! Grades: Grades will be determined by the following: 1. Tests 50% 2. Class Assignments 50% Make-up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to inquire about work missed. Work must be completed within 3 days of returning to school. If the student misses an extended amount of time, consideration will be given. Materials: 1. One 3-ring binder (1 inch) 2. Paper 3. Pens or pencils (no red ink) Text: This class does not use a textbook, but will use a variety of reading materials including SRA reading kits. Test Taking Strategies 6. Note Taking Skills 7. Career Interest Inventory Topics to be covered during the second semester: 1. Using Textbooks 2. Reference Materials 3. Shorthand for Notes 4. Library Skills 5. Dictionary Skills 6. Note Taking (outlining) 7. Career Exploration Topics to be covered during the third semester: 1. Following Directions (written) 2. Following Directions (spoken) 3. Map Skills 4. Listening Skills 5. Using Context Clues 6. Career Exploration 7. Pathways Planning Classroom Rules and Expectations: 1. Be on time and have appropriate materials each day. 2. Follow all school rules. 3. Show respect toward your teacher and classmates. 4. Talk only during appropriate times. 5. Food, drink and gum are allowed in study skills; however, all papers MUST be deposited in the trash can. 6. Have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!! Grades: Your study skills grades will be determined by the following: 1. Study skills assignments 50% 2. Completing your planner 25% 3. Using your time wisely 25% Make-up Work – Assignments given in study skills are due at the end of each week. You will have plenty of time to make up my assignments in my class. Materials: 1. One 3-ring binder (1 inch) 2. Planner - your planner will be checked daily and will be a significant part of your grade. You do not have to purchase a fancy planner. A spiral notebook is acceptable.
