Fitness and Fun in Physical Education

Cullman High School

To parents and students of Cullman High School, welcome to the physical education program. We believe that physical education is an important and essential aspect of the total school curriculum. It is not only vital to physical fitness, but is necessary for the total development of a person’s well being. With this in mind, our overall program objective is to provide students with the opportunity to develop physical, mental and social skills through a variety of activities.

The purpose of this letter is to provide information on policies, requirements, etc. to BOTH parents and students. Parents: please read and discuss this information with your child. If you have any concerns, feel free to contact one of us during the school day (8:15-3:15) at 734-3923. We look forward to working with your child this year as we continue in our efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle for all!!

                             Physical Education Syllabus

1.     Dressing out policy: In order to fully participate in selected activities, each student MUST provide a change of clothes to wear during physical education class. Proper attire, which is acceptable, might include: athletic/gym shorts, t-shirt, warm-ups, sweats, etc. The only acceptable shoes are tennis shoes. Athletic socks please!! A uniform is required and can be purchased at Cummings sporting goods.

The following are NOT permitted: t-shirts with inappropriate ads/language; midriff shirts and tank top; cut-offs, low riding shorts and/or bluejeans/bluejean shorts.

2.     Locker room facilities/lockers: The boys/girls locker rooms are available to all students who bring a change of clothes each day. Restrooms, dressing stalls and showers are also available for student’s use…he/she may bring the following personal hygiene items to use after the daily activities: deodorant (only clear gel and/or spray allowed…no white paste); lotion and/or cologne (only plastic containers absolutely NO GLASS), soap, towels, and/or other items for personal grooming.

*LOCKERS: Lockers are available for students’ use in the dressing areas. Should a student select to use one of these lockers, he/she can rent a lock for 3.00 a year to secure personal items. If a student does NOT want to secure items overnight, then he/she MUST take ALL ITEMS (clothes, etc.) home each day (a small gym-bag may be used for this purpose). The school cannot be responsible for valuables left in the locker room/gym. It is a student’s responsibility to “secure” his/her belongings (clothes, jewelry, band instruments, etc.) in their locker. Any items left “unlocked” in lockers will be removed!! *NOTE: The larger lockers are available to ALL students during each class period to secure school clothes, band instruments, etc…they are NOT to be locked overnight!! If a lock is left on a large locker, it will be cut-off.

3.     Students have approximately ten minutes before and after class to dress. They MUST redress into their clothes before leaving physical education class.

4.     Locker room use is a privilege for students who are dressing out each day, therefore, if a student does NOT dress out (forgets gym clothes, is ill, etc.) then he/she will report directly to his/her assigned seat in Gym.

5.     INJURY/MEDICAL EXCUSES:

a.     Students MUST report all injuries which occur during the class activity to his/her teacher IMMEDIATELY

b.     If a student is unable to participate due to an injury, illness, etc. he /she will be excused for the day provided a note from home is turned in to the teacher. An alternate assignment will be given in order for the student to receive credit for the missed activity (one note from home per Tri-mester).

c.     If the student is unable to participate for more than three consecutive days, then a doctor’s note is required. Again, a written/alternate assignment will be given for missed activities.

d.     Extended alternative assignments will be given for long-term injuries, consecutive days of non-participation and repeated disruption of instruction.

 6. GRADING: It is our overall goal to provide each student with daily fitness/sports related activities. Therefore, all students are expected to dress and participate daily in order to receive full credit for the selected activity. If a student is not properly dressed, at the teachers’ discretion, an alternative assignment will be given.

                                      Grading Scale:

Daily = dressing out/participation…………………………………………90%

Skill knowledge/improvement……………………………………………..5%

General = attitude, effort, cooperation, sportsmanship………………...5%

7.     The Physical Education Discipline Plan will be discussed “ in detail” with students and is as follows: Not dressing out or participating on two or more unexcused days in a six weeks grading period will eliminate the possibility of acquiring an A average and result in a referral to the office for disciplinary action.

8.     Activities:  During the 12 weeks of class instruction, all of the Physical Education Academic Knowledge and Skills will be covered for each grade level.  The emphasis will be on daily fitness to promote a healthy/active lifestyle, as well as instruction in the fundamentals of a variety of team and individual sport activities.
