2nd Grade Class Syllabus

The main focus of the reading program will be to teach word study skills 
(phonics), reading vocabulary, literary comprehension, informational 
comprehension, functional comprehension and fluency. 

Three books will be used to teach reading this year: 
1.Comprehension ToolKit (for intense comprehension skills), 2.Open Court 
Phonics (To teach skill(s) of letter/sound relationships, spelling patterns, 
high frequency words, word meaning and word structure. ) and 3. Text Talk 
(for vocabulary study) There will be phonic skill tests after we have 
covered the different skills, weekly vocabulary test with definitions, and 
comprehension passages to make up the reading grade. 

I will also use The Super Six Reading Strategies along with graphic 
organizers and workbook related skills for review.

I will require 3 AR books per week to be read in each child's specific 
reading level.(1 and 1/2 points) 

Math- Our math lessons will come primarily from the math book, HARCOURT 
MATH. I will incorporate math games, reinforcement worksheets and skills 
taught through AMSTI which also include keeping a math journal. I will give 
chapter test at the end of each chapter. The weekly DOM test will count as a 
math grade also. I may take grades from class work. 

There will be five main units taught in second grade:  (1) Numbers and 
Operations,(2) Measurement, (3) Algebra, (4) Data, Analysis, and Probability 
(5) Geometry.  

Spelling- Spelling tests will be given weekly. Spelling words will be 
made up of sight words, words with phonetic patterns and vocabulary words. 

English- We will focus on parts of speech, subject-
verb agreement, capitalization and punctuation, using possessives, forming 
letters legibly (using Zaner Bloser), spacing appropriately when writing, 
letter writing and penmanship. Tests will be given weekly or by-weekly 
covering the skills we work on during the week. DOL test will be given every 
week on material covered on morning work.

Writing Workshop- Our writing program this year will consist of using the 
writing process skills (prewriting,revising,publishing).  We will write 
stories during the year using the basic writing skills.

Social Sciences- Social Sciences will cover many topics throughout the year. 
In science we will cover the units physical, life, earth and space science. 
We will teach these by using the book, Harcourt Science, and by 
incorporating AMSTI science kits. These kits will provide hands-on 
activities. 

Social Studies will include learning about our nation and the different 
people and places of the world. These units will be taught through the 
Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook and teacher created units. Grades 
for these units will be taken from class work,and 
participation.
