Dear Parents;
Welcome to the New Year. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I know
I thoroughly enjoyed the time off.

*******MIDTERM REPORTS WERE SENT HOME TODAY. Please sign and return the
whole report by Wednesday so I know that you’ve seen it. Once I’ve
documented it, I will return the reports to you.

MATH
This week we will be reviewing adding & subtracting fractions and mixed
numbers. This is NOT a new concept for the children; so hopefully, they
won’t have too much trouble. The difficulty may come when we add and have to
regroup or when we subtract and have to borrow. I will give detailed notes
that they will be able to follow at home. Please look over their work to
make sure they seem to understand what they are doing and then if they don’t
you can bring them in early for me to do some re-teaching. The test for Ch.
6 will be Tuesday, Jan. 12th.

LANGUAGE/WRITING/READING
Reading logs were taken up today and new ones distributed. The children also
received DLR and DPE for this week.
We are going to begin our study of Poetry and the different types of poems.
The children will create a poetry notebook with their own original poems in
it.
We will continue our study of figurative language, focusing on idioms this
week. The children will select an idiom to illustrate and explain the
figurative and literal meanings.
AR 2:3 is due by next Thursday, 1/14.
As always the children should be reading at least 30 pages every night.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE
Daily Geography – “The West Indies” was distributed today. The test will be
Friday.
In Social Studies, we will conclude our study of Overseas Expansion and the
Spanish American War. The Test will be next Tuesday, Jan. 12. Daily
Geography will continue. This week’s topic will be “The Middle East Region”.

In Science, we will complete our study of Earthquakes and then begin studying
volcanoes. The children will learn 3 types of volcanoes and their
characteristics, examples of volcanoes and their effects. We will watch
videos and read from magazines about volcanoes.
