2nd Grade Class Syllabus Reading- Text Talk, Comprehension Tool Kit, National Geograpic and non- fiction text will be the main focus of the reading program. I will use The Super Six Reading Strategies along with graphic organizers. Weekly vocabulary test with definitions, class work and graphic organizers will make up the reading grade. I will also require 3 AR books per week to be read in each child's specific reading level. The main focus of the reading program will be to teach word study skills, reading vocabulary, literary comprehension, informational comprehension, functional comprehension and fluency. Math- Our math lessons will come primarily from the math book, HARCOURT MATH. I will incorporate math games, reinforcement worksheets and skills taught through AMSTI which also includes keeping a math journal. I will give chapter test at the end of each chapter and weekly time tests. I will also take grades from class work. There will be five main units taught in second grade: (1) Numbers and Operations,(2) Measurement, (3) Algebra, (4) Data, Analysis, and Probability (5) Geometry. Spelling- Spelling tests will be given weekly. Spelling words will be made up of sight words, words with phonetic patterns and vocabulary words. English- Our English lessons will be taught through the Houghton Mifflin English series. Through this book we will focus on parts of speech, subject- verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation and using possessives. A test will be given at the end of each English unit or at the end of each skill being taught. I will also be taking a grade on the weekly Daily Oral Language that we do each morning in class. Phonics- Phonics will be taught using Open Court Phonics. Through this book I will teach the skill(s) of letter/sound relationships, spelling patterns, high frequency words, word meaning and word structure. There will be a formal test given after each skill is completed. Writing Workshop- We will be writing descriptive and narrative stories using the writing process. Handwriting- Children will practice forming letters legibly, spacing appropriatlely when writing, and neat penmanship using Zaner-Bloser. Social Sciences- Social Sciences will cover many topics throughout the year. In science we will cover the units physical, life, earth and space science. We will teach these by using the book, Harcourt Science and by incorporating AMSTI science kits. These kits will provide hands-on activities, as well as using the scientific method of keeping science journals. Social Studies will include learning about our nation and the different people and places of the world. These units will be taught through the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook and teacher created units. Grades for these units will be taken from tests, class work, science journals, and participation.
