LINES FROM THE LITERACY LOFT

Dolch Word Lists

These words are commonly called "sight words" because they should be
recognized and said "instantly" during reading. Good readers decode words
so that they are said instantly, therefore, assuring the automaticity
essential to comprehension.

Being able to decode individual words is essential to fluency in reading,
but we must follow up with phrase and sentence reading. When words are used
in meaningful context, fluency is improved as well as comprehension.

Practice individual word recognition with the Dolch word lists and then be
sure to follow up with "Fry Phrases Practice" on this site to practice
reading sight words embedded in phrases.

This listing of words is separated into 11 word lists in order of frequency.
