About The Teachers

Maria Smith
This is my 6th year at Irondale Community School! I have also taught 3rd 
Grade and have taught Reading at Grantswood Community School.

I earned my Master's degree in Early Childhood Education (2000) and a
Bachelor's Degree in Applied Linguistics (Grammar)(1997) - both at UAB. In 
accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act, I am highly-qualified in Early 
Childhood Education N-3 and in Reading K-12. I am currently working on my 
Masters in Gifted Education at the University of South Alabama.
 
I love all the subjects I teach, but I must admit that READING and "Out of 
the Box" are my favorites! (Check out our in-class Library with over 1000 
books!!!)

I have been married to Mr. Smith for 25 years. We have 7th grade son, 
Tre, who is the joy of our lives. 

We have 2 dogs (Ally -- an 8-year-old Golden Retreiver and Max, a 3-year-old 
birddog mix. We also have an 13-year-old tortoise-shell cat named Kitty.
