Homework

Spelling
Each child will receive a spelling list and contract on the first day of
each week. Two assignments on the list must be completed and turned in by
Thursday of each week. They can choose from writing their words three times
each, using each word in a sentence, looking up each word in a dictionary
and writing its definition, or putting the words in ABC order. One spelling
homework grade will be given each week, so each assignment is worth 50
points. Homework will be accepted on Friday for half credit if completed
correctly. Spelling tests will be given each Friday.

Reading
Reading is an essential part of life. I am asking that each child reads to
a parent or older sibling for 15 minutes a day at least four days a week
(starting Monday and ending Sunday). A new reading log will be given to
each child each nine weeks. It will have instructions on the bottom and
should be kept in the homework folder at all times. Each student should
read for a minimum of 15 minutes four nights a week and then have a parent
or guardian initial on the reading log for the corresponding day. Reading
logs will be checked every Monday and will be worth 10 points each week and
100 points each 9 weeks. Reading logs will only be accepted one day late
for half credit. A grade of 0 will be given to any reading log that is more
than one day late. It is fairly flexible so if your child would like to
read for 30 minutes one night, it may count for two days on the reading
log. Remember, the only way to get better at something is practice,
practice, practice! Please feel free to set your own reading goals with
your child and encourage him/her to read even more than is required.
Reading aloud to your child is also a great way to expand their vocabulary.
However, the only way they will become better readers is for them to do it
themselves. Please make sure the child is the one that is reading for the
reading log. I will be looking for an adult's initials on four days each
week (Monday through Sunday) for full credit.

Math
Math homework will be sent home on the first day of each week and is due on
the last day of each week. It will be 1 or 2 worksheets in which the child
must complete every problem on the front and back. Homework will be
accepted one day late for half credit if completed correctly. All math
homework grades will be averaged together each nine weeks and will count as
one math grade on the report card.
