Gifted English 8

This class is for identified gifted students. Unlike the RLC classes in elementary school, this class is your English class in addition to your RLC class. That means that you will receive your gifted services through the course of English while learning the state mandated course of study objectives for 8th grade English. We will study grammar, enrich our vocabulary, and read selected pieces of literature (novels, short stories, poetry). This class will be following the new curriculum of the Pre-AP/Honors English class in order to prepare the students for taking AP courses when they are in high school.

In addition to the literary texts offered by the literature textbook, we will read five supplemental novels during this class. You will need to acquire a copy of each of the following novels for the semester:

Night - Elie Wiesel

Farewell toManzanar - Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston

Across Five Aprils - Irene Hunt

The Witch of Blackbird Pond - Elizabeth George Speare

Twelfth Night - William Shakespeare (it is recommended that you purchase the Spark Notes No Fear Shakespeare version of this play - it has the original Shakespeare on one side and modern English translations on the other); the others will be selected later in the semester and this site will be updated then.

If you are one of my students you will need the first novel, Night by September 2, 2008.
