SPANISH II
SYLLABUS

Course Objectives: The student will build upon the basic vocabulary and
grammar concepts learned in Spanish I to expand vocabulary breadth and
mastery of discussing events occurring in the past, future, as well as,
conditional tenses. The student should be able to comprehend and converse
at a Level I or Level II at the conclusion of the course.
Critical Objectives: The student will learn the following:
1. Asking questions, interrogative words
2. The “personal a”
3. Review telling time
4. Use of “ser” versus “estar”
5. Numbers to 1,000,000
6. Use of “saber” versus “conocer”
7. Direct and indirect object pronouns
8. Reflexive and possessive pronouns
9. Verbs: present, simple past, imperfect past, future, conditional
tenses, and present perfect tense
10. The use of the simple past versus the imperfect past tenses
11. The use of the prepositions “por” and “para”
12. Demonstrative, and possessive adjectives
13. Commands (Formal-Usted and Familiar-Tú)
14. Giving directions
15. Idiomatic expressions
16. History and geography of the Hispanic World
17. Cultural knowledge about the Hispanic World
Textbook: The course will utilize the Abordo text (1997 edition), the
accompanying workbook, as well as, teacher developed materials,
presentations, and visual aids.
Course Philosophy: The course is designed to: 1) present a basic review
for all students on vocabulary and grammar concepts learned in Spanish I, 2)
expand existing vocabulary related to typical activities and tasks, 3)
increase the proficiency of reading and listening comprehension, 4) provide
opportunities to increase speaking proficiency, and 5) deepen cultural,
geographic ,and historical knowledge of the Hispanic World.
Student Requirements: The student is expected to attend class, bring text
and workbook daily, participate in all class activities, complete assigned
work, study and review covered material, and take all scheduled quizzes and
tests. Any student with an excused absence for the day of a test will be
able to make it up on Thursday mornings (7:00 – 7:30) up to two Thursdays
after the date of the missed exam.
Homework assignments are normally due the day after assignment, unless
otherwise specified. Homework will be accepted up to two days late, and,
after being graded for completeness, will be reduced by a letter grade for
each day past due date.
Importance of Class Participation: Students are expected and encouraged to
participate in class activities and discussions. Participation is graded on
a daily basis: by proficiency demonstrated on daily warm up quizzes, and
also completion of assigned class work, participation in group activities,
and responses to questions. Participation equates to 15% of your class
grade.
Grading: The following grading system will be utilized to determine each
student’s grade for the course:

All students will take the Mid-Term Examination. Prattville High School
policy will be followed regarding exemptions from Finals.
Generally teaching units follow the Abordo text and will include a
vocabulary quiz, grammar quiz, various homework assignments, and the unit
test. Each unit requires about six days, depending on the complexity of
the material covered.
Mid Terms and Finals are comprehensive over each nine week period.
