Mission:
The mission of Prattville Kindergarten's Guidance and Counseling Program is
to meet the needs of the whole child; social, emotional, physical and
academic growth. Sequential and developmentally appropriate experiences are
provided in a safe, caring and encouraging environment. Children are given
the opportunity to develop a positive self-concept and a strong sense of
belonging, which will provide the foundation for a successful life.
Prattville Kindergarten's Guidance and Counseling Program:
Each month, I meet with every class for 30 minutes. What a joy and
privilege! The counseling program is designed to be preventive, outcome-
based, and developmental. Program goals are met through carefully planned
activities. The Alabama Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Model is used
to develop program goals in the following areas: personal/social
development, academic development and career awareness/development.
Activities are designed to strengthen and/or develop:
* Understanding the school environment
* Understanding self and others
* Developing decision-making and problem-solving skills
* Developing interpersonal and communication skills
* Developing school success skills
* Creating career awareness and educational planning
In addition to monthly large group activities, I also see children in small
groups or individually. Referrals are made by teachers, administrators,
parents, and sometimes the children themselves. Small group time offers an
opportunity for the development of personal and social skills common to 5
and 6 year olds. Small groups provide a chance for children to share, learn
from one another and increase a sense of belonging. Small groups meet 3 to
6 times based on the topic. Meeting with children individually provides a
time for children to feel special and offers an opportunity for them to
express their thoughts and feelings. It also provides an opportunity to
respond to a child's identified interests or needs such as: accepting
responsibility, understanding appropriate and inappropriate behavior,
understanding choices and consequences, etc.
Again, I consider it an honor and privilege to be a part of each child's
kindergarten experience.
