What is a Reading Calendar / Log and why is it important?

Research shows that being read to is the most important factor in a child’s,
acquisition of reading skills. The teachers at PKS decided that to increase
the amount of books being read to, with, or by a child, families could keep
a Reading Calendar / Log.
Teachers turn in the total of all the reading logs in their class to the
librarian. The class that has read the most gets a blue ribbon to hang
beside their wagon. The wagon has a calendar to show how many books the
class read each month. The wagons are on the library wall in our hallway.
I also post the numbers outside our door.
Nothing is said to a child about not returning a Reading Log. This is
merely a way to increase reading at home.

When can children check out books from the library?

The whole class goes to the library every other Friday. On the week we have
music, the children who return their books on Thursday can go to the library
and check out another book. This allows the children to check out a book
every week.
