SUMMER PLANNING GUIDE
School is almost over and summer break is fast approaching. Are your summer plans intact, or do you prefer to do nothing at all? To get the most out of your summer break, be active and spend your time doing something productive such as working, volunteering or planning for college. These things will not only help you to avoid being a couch potato, but will give you independence, help you acquire new skills and grow personally and professionally.
Find a job: Find a job that you enjoy and will help you with your long term career aspirations.
Network: Start networking now to find a great summer job, specifically one that will help build your skills and credentials.
Find an Internship: An internship may be tough to come by on short notice, but ask around.
Volunteer: Volunteering is a great way to help your community, enhance your skills, improve your resume, and beef up your college and scholarship applications.
Plan for College: The summer is a good time to research schools and narrow down your options, especially if you are going into your senior year of high school.
Take a class: Get a head start on college, fulfill some needed requirements, and improve on a subject where you need help or acquire a new skill.
Improve your test score: Take an ACT or SAT prep course to help you achieve the best possible score on your standardized exams.
Broaden your skills: Summer is a great time to engage in activities which will improve your professional skills and help build a strong foundation for your future success.

Mesa Community College’s Teen Technology Camp is a structured enrichment program for young people, ages 13-16. Highly investigative, hands-on learning opportunities are designed to enable teens to expand their academic and technology skills in areas that target their interests. CULINARY CAMP
Arizona Culinary Institute – June 23-26, 2008
Students will spend two days learning basic culinary skills and two days learning the principles of baking and pastry. Basic sanitation, knife skills, cooking techniques, basic baking and decorating skills will be taught. To ensure personal attention, program is limited to two classes of 15 students.

MIDWESTERN UNIVERSITY'S annual Health Careers Institute for High School Students will tke place this year from July 10 through July 19 on theUniversity's campus in Glendale. This FREE enrichment program is open to all current high school students (must be 16 by July 10 to apply), and offers hands-on lab activities and lectures designed to introduce students to a variety of exciting health professions.
The deadline for application to the Institute is May 1, and all applicants are required to submit a recommendation letter from a science teacher. A special Open House will be held on Saturday, July 19 for families, teachers, and counselors. Participating students will showcase what they have learned, and informatio will be presented on admissions and financial aid.

CENTRAL ARIZONA COLLEGE First Step Summer 2008
For students completing their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year in high school. This is a summer academic program that gives high school students an opportunity to get an early start into college by taking college courses during the summer months. Students accepted into the FIRST STEP program receive a grant that pays for in-state tuition for up to 7 credits. Students are responsible for the purchase of their books. Students may register for classes at any time before May 22nd. Interested students stop in the Career Center and pick up an application for admission and take it to registration at CAC.

NAYEC will help you build entrepreneurial skills, gain real-world experience, and teach you how to plan, implement, and run your own business. With the guidance of highly qualified instructors, you will learn the basics of economics, computer skills, and business-plan preparation.
The tuition fee of $650/student covers six nights in an on-campus residence hall with linen, 3 meals a day, session materials, instruction, and basic extra-curricular feels. The Institute is a one-week leadership seminar at ASU for AZ high school juniors and seniors. Participants must apply during either their sophomore or junior year. Students who are selected to attend the Institute will participate in workshops, create original work projects and live on the Tempe or downtown campus during the program. The program is free of cost to the 2008 delegates. Approximately 50 students will be selected to participate. Meals, residential housing fees and supplies are all covered by the Institute
Topics to be covered will be: Multi-cultural issues, Individual Futures,
Community Issues, Political Empowerment, Strategies for Leadership and Education Resources.

BERKLEE SUMMER PROGRAMS Berklee College of Music
You probably know that Berklee College of Music is the premier institution in the world for the study of jazz and contemporary music. But you might not realize that in addition to its full-time degree and diploma programs, Berklee also offers a wide selection of summer programs for qualified participants who are not enrolled at the college. Their summer programs vary in emphasis and range in length from one weekend to five weeks, or even a full 12-week summer semester. One or more may be right for you.
As a student in one of Berklee's summer programs, you will spend much of your time in classes between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM every weekday. But when you have a break between classes or time after school, you can find jam sessions, make use of the private practice rooms, or visit the Learning Center, which is equipped with 40 computer synthesizer workstations featuring the latest in educational software.
Berklee's summer programs are taught by members of the Berklee College of Music factulty - not students or teaching assistants. Visiting artists present clinics and concerts during their programs, and as a Berklee summer student, you will have free admission to Berklee-sponsored concerts and recitals. You will also have access to Berklee's Career Development Center and the Stan Getz Media Center and Library, where you may view videos of past concerts, clinics, and commencement addresses such as this given by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Billy Joel, Joe Lovano, and Sting.

What is it? FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The federal government uses this form to determine your eligibility for financial aid, which includes: grants, work-study, scholarships and loans.
Why fill it out? The FAFSA is used to determine how much aid you're eligible for.
EFC stands for Expected Family Contribution. Your family must contribute this amount in the coming year to your college costs, according to the government's calculation.
How does it work? Your prospective college will try to meet your financial need through aid made up of funds from federal, state, school and private sources. This may include loans, grants, scholarships and student employment.

CHAMBERLAIN College of Nursing
Founded in St. Louis, Missouri, Chamberlain College of Nursing has been providing high quality nursing education since 1889. The college opened it's first campus outside of St. Louis in Columbus, Ohio in March 2007 and recently received approval to open a campus in Addison, Illinois in March 2008.
Chamberlain is offering a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree program at its new location in Phoenix. The BSN program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Chamberlain College of Nursing is also accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. Chamberlain's BSN program is an accelerated nine-semester year round program that enables students to complete their degree in three years. Chamberlain's facility includes five state-of-the-art nursing skills laboratories, and is co-located with DeVry University at 2149 W. Dunlap Avenue. Applications are currently being accepted for the first spring class session. Chamberlain offers spring, summer and fall enrollment.

RMASS - ACT AND SAT PREPARATION WORKSHOP
ZAPS & RMASS conduct educational seminars across the nation, assisting high school students toward higher test scores and achieving their goal of attaining a college education. Over many test prep seasons, Dr. Jim Minnihan and his presenters have helped thousands of students raise their college entrance test scores.
During the 5 hour seminars, through a combination of effective test taking strategies, a well developed Study Guide, specific practice on sample ACT and SAT tests, and motivational instruction, seminar students can expect to achieve ACT score increases of 2-8 points and SAT increases of from 50-200 points.

Summer Music Program Scholarships
Each summer, hundreds of students from around the nation are selected by audition to attend their renowned summer programs for musical theater, opera/classical voice, technical theater, and drama/theater. Students follow a pre-college curriculum of both classroom training and on-stage experience. Participants receive training from their acclaimed Bass Music professors in their new, $38 million dollar music center - the most technologically advanced music facility in the nation.

What is the WUE? WESTERN UNDERGRADUATE EXCHANGE
WUE, the Western Undergraduate Exchange tuition program, is coordinated by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (www.wiche.edu/sep/wue). The program allows eligible students from participating states to enroll in any undergraduate program at participating states at reduced tuition rates. Which states participate in WUE? Resident students from the following states are eligible for consideration into the WUE tuition program: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexcio, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Students are automatically considered for WUE based on information provided in their admissions packet. Students should also provide a photocopy of their state driver's license to prove residency in their WUE state.
