Of Mice and Men deals with many facets of human
responsibility,
loyalty, and love. The main moral conflict deals with George's
responsibility to Lennie and to the rest of the group. Lennie
has a tendency
to accidentally kill small, soft animals; he is unaware of his
own strength.
This repeatedly leads to problems, and George has to keep a
constant watch
over Lennie to make sure he does not hurt or kill anyone or
anything.
George's friendship and loyalty to Lennie force him to make a
horrific
decision.

The Crucible
Writing Assessment

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men
do nothing.
					Edmond Burke

Prewriting /15

The historical events surrounding the Salem Witch Trial seem
unreal. How could such a horrible travesty of the court and
judicial system be perpetrated? Your task is to assign blame to
the characters whom you feel are most responsible for such a
reprehensible situation. After completing the prewriting video
notes, divide the circle below into appropriate portions and
label each section with the character's name to indicate what
part (percentage) of the situation was their fault according to
the “evidence” gathered.

Using your pie chart, formulate a thesis statement. It should
clearly state your opinion of who you believe should be held
responsible for the deaths of innocent people.

Note: There were many characters whose actions and decisions led
to the Salem Witch Trials. Be sure to consider as many
characters as you feel contributed to the situation.

Rough Draft	/25

Write your rough draft. Use your thesis statement to help you
organize a logical 5-paragraph persuasive essay. Imagine you
are an investigator (role) who wishes to file charges (format)
against these characters for the “crimes” you feel they have
committed (topic). Use information in the drama The Crucible to
describe each “guilty” character's actions to the judge and
district attorney (audience). Use your textbook as a a resource.

Revision /5

Revise your rough draft by adding, cutting, replacing, and/or
reordering your words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. Be
sure to include enough vivid, concrete details so that your
essay will make sense to anyone, even if that person is
unfamiliar with the story.
You should use a dictionary and thesaurus to help with word
choice.

Editing /5

Proofread your rough draft by checking your paper for mistakes
in grammar, usage, and mechanics (including spelling,
punctuation, and capitalization). Ask yourself these questions:

1.Does every sentence begin with a capital letter?
2.Does every sentence end with appropriate punctuation?
3.Have I avoided fragments and run-ons?
4.Have I used strong, powerful verbs?
5.Are the verbs in the correct tense and correct form?
6.Have I avoided slang or modern grammar usage which would not
fit the time period?
7.Are all the words spelled correctly?

Final Draft /100

Use the MLA format to write your final copy. Make sure you
write or type it in the correct manuscript form. (See
instructions in writing portfolio). Make sure your handwriting
is legible. Use a standard size 12 font if you type your essay.

1.Use only one side of the paper. Do not write on back side.
2.Type your paper OR write it in blue or black ink.
3.If you type, double-space the lines. If you write by hand,
don't skip lines.
4.Leave one-inch margins on all four sides of the paper. Do not
write in margins.
5.Indent the first line of each paragraph. (Hit TAB for
indentation when typing).
6.Number all pages, except the first page, in the upper right-
hand corner.
7.Neatly write your MLA heading on the left hand side of the
first page.
8.Turn essay in on due date.  No late work will be accepted;
excuses are unacceptable.

Prewriting Directions: Imagine that you are alive in 1692,
during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. You are a
prosecuting attorney who witnesses the events personally and
investigates them fully. Your task is to gather “evidence”
against those persons who are actually responsible for the
deaths of innocent people and present your conclusions to a new
court. To do so, you must document the guilty characters'
actions and their comments as you view the video by filling in
the chart completely.

How do I get permission to watch the videos shown in class?

Dear Student,
English 11: American Literature class is an opportunity
to demonstrate what you've learned in the last 10 or 11 years of
formal education and to further build on that foundation of
knowledge and skills. My goal is that this class will be of
benefit to you in preparing for your future success. What goals
and plans have you made for yourself? How is earning credit for
this class a stepping stone toward achieving those goals?
Please fully complete the information below, and have
your parents sign it. Return this back page to your teacher.
Keep the rest of the handout as it will be used throughout the
year. Also, keep all handouts which are printed on colored
paper.

I give my permission to my son/daughter to view videos
(indicated by an * on the course syllabus) as necessary to
supplement the Early American Literature which is read in

completion of required writing assignments. I also agree with
the classroom policies set forth in the syllabus.
