VOCABULARY FOR THE YEAR
                                                            

1.  plot – actions or events of a story

2.  setting – time and place of an event in a story

3.  resolution – the point in the story when the problem is solved

4.  predict – to figure out things before they happen

5.  prefix – the part of the word that comes before the root word

6.  suffix – the part of the word that comes at the end of the 
root               word

7.  factors – the numbers that are multiplied to give a product

8.  product – the answer to a multiplication problem

   9. infer – to come to a conclusion based on facts

  10. draft – writing all the writer’s ideas on paper

  11. prewriting – planning a writing project

  12. editing – checking for spelling, grammar, and mechanics   errors

  13. revising – making changes to improve the draft

  14. quotation – the exact words of the speaker

  15. homophone – when one of two or more words is pronounced the same but 
are different in meaning or spelling

  16. mode – the number that occurs most often in a collection of data

  17. median – the middle number in a set of numbers arranged in numerical 
order

  18. range – subtract the smallest and largest numbers in a set

  19. data – facts or information from which conclusions can be drawn

  20. dividend – a number to be divided

  21. tessellation – an arrangement of shapes that covers an area without any 
gaps or overlaps

  22. denominator – the bottom number of a fraction

  23. numerator – the top number of a fraction

  24. divisor – the number by which the dividend is divided

  25. area -  the number of square units needed to cover a region or figure

  26. perimeter – the distance around an object

  27. quotient – the answer to a division problem

  28. remainder – the leftover pieces in a division problem that can not be 
divided equally

  29. simile – a comparison between unlike nouns using like or as to make the 
comparison

  30. metaphor – an implied comparison between two different things
