My name is Megan Mayer and I am the school counselor servicing Madison 
Heights and Madison Park School.  This is my 14th year in the Madison 
School District, and my background as a classroom teacher and middle school 
Counselor has prepared me well for working in a variety of settings.  Former 
students of mine are now in their 20's and "friending" me on Facebook!  Wow 
how time flies!

I invite parents and staff to read the counseling brochure located in the 
main office of each campus for more information on the type of services I 
provide and my personal philosophy and implementation of counseling.

I am a certified Choice Theory therapist and use this concept of counseling 
in my professional career as well as my personal life.

What is Choice Theory?

Choice Theory is a conceptual philosophy of counseling and life that centers 
around our basic needs.  Every human being has 5 basic needs that drive their 
decisions and choices on a daily basis.  Often we make our decisions hoping 
to fulfill one or enhance one of these needs.  The 5 basic needs are 
survival, love, freedom, power, and fun.  If we can truly gain understanding 
in what need is that is not being met, we can better determine why a child, 
or any person, may be making the choices they are.  If we can pinpoint the 
need, we can approach and select solutions that are most appropriate and 
beneficial to support that need.  Further, Choice Theory centers around the 
attachment of consequences to our choices.  If we desire a different outcome, 
we need to examine our choices and select the one that will help us to get 
our desired outcome/result.  One of the most important ideas I strive to 
guide children and adults/parents to understand is that the only person's 
behavior we can control, is our own.  To learn more about Choice Theory,

I continue to enjoy classroom interaction and lessons with students, and also 
gain a lot by observing students in their natural surroundings and relations 
with others.  This exposure assists me in obtaining a well rounded view of 
the student and ways to better support them!
