This summer I was one out of 280 teachers world wide lucky enough to be chosen
to attend Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama. It was there I trained as many of
the astronauts do and participated in simulations of the Discovery and the
Endeavor shuttle missions. I was entertained by stories from astronaut Story
Musgrave who is responsible for the success of the Hubble telescope, and by
the author of the novel Rocket Boys, Homer Hickum. I created rockets and
watched them shoot into the humid skies and was fascinated by the power of a
simple piece of aluminum foil when it comes to thermal protection. It was a
week packed full of fun and was extremely informative. I look forward to
taking some of what I learned and sharing that with the students as we pay
heed to to NASA's movement toward Mars.
