The seventh grade AEP class will be concentrating on the novel form this
year. The books are chosen to mirror the student's history curriculum. After
a week of "getting to know each other" which includes writing a personal
narrative, students will begin reading a primary source book of the Civil
War: The Narrative of Frederick Douglas. We will then research various slave
narratives collected by the Library of Congress and view the TNT movie of
Uncle Tom's Cabin. I will ask parents to sign a waiver for each film viewed
in class. If you have ANY reservations concerning your child's viewing of a
film, please tell me and an alternate assignment will be arranged.
Weeks six through eleven (approximately) will have the class studying A
Soldier's Heart and Red Badge of Courage. This will end our Civil War readings.
We will be writing every week. Students concentrate on the 6 Traits and
creativity in seventh grade writing but will also be introduced to the
academic essay and will write a research paper. Grammar, sentence structure,
and word choice are stressed.
All lessons are planned around the seventh through ninth grade Arizona
State Standards, the National Gifted Standards, and the Arizona Technology
Standards.
