About The Teacher

Greetings students and parents!

Let me introduce myself.

Once in a while I have a student who asks my age. I tell them that I'm old
enough to have grandchildren but that I'm a 'young' grandma:) I have four
children and 10 grandchildren (with #11 on the way).

In addition to enjoying children, I also have a love for animals. Currently
I have a cat named Newbie (a rescue from a San Diego animal shelter) and
Jessie (a stray that we rescued last year here in Phoenix). They are
absolutely wonderful and full of personality.

Hobbies (besides pets and grandchildren) include playing the piano and
clarinet; sewing; cross stitch; reading; cooking; writing. Do I have much
spare time to do these extras? Not really, but I'm thankful for summer
vacations when I can put a little effort into these things I enjoy besides
teaching.

I've taught at schools in Arizona and California for 14 years, and have
taught private piano. My parents and brothers were/are school teachers.
They all have inspired me in the field of education, and I've enjoyed the
profession immensely. Never a dull moment in the classroom! I enjoy sharing
knowledge that I've gained from education, reading, and my own experiences.
I also appreciate discussions we have together in class.

In Language Arts, students will write book reports, stories, poems, letters,
and a country report. Grammar, spelling, and other mechanics in writing will
be practiced throughout the year. Reading skills should improve as we
discuss and read from various genres. There will also be in-class group
projects that students should enjoy.

In Social Studies, students will be improving map skills, using erasable
maps, atlases and the Smart Board. It is my hope that all students will be
able to locate places easily on a globe or world map. Students will also be
expected to memorize our own states and capitals, with proper placement on a
map. From our text book, students will get an interesting overview of Early
Societies/Civilization, Africa, Asia, Greece, Rome, Empires, Medieval and
Renaissance, Industrial Revolution, and the World Wars. Hopefully, students
are able to access classzone.com in order to have the text-"book" at home.

If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please don't hesitate to
contact me. You will probably get the quickest response via e-mail. Please
use njohnston@msd38.org OR leave a message in my classroom at 602-664-7608,
and I'll try to respond as quickly as I can.

I anticipate a wonderful year and hope you have the same.
