"The children in our
classes are unique in their personalities, cultural experiences and values.
Different students prefer different learning environments, learning modalities
and they all exhibit unique strengths, talents and/or weaknesses.
Understanding the different ways that children learn, interact with, and
process information can help us modify the way we teach so that all students
have an equal opportunity to succeed."

Brain-based research
shows that no two children learn alike. Therefore, it is important to use a
broad spectrum of strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.
DAILY
STRATEGIES USED IN MY CLASSROOM INCLUDE..
-
USING PRE-ASSESSMENTS TO IDENTIFY A STUDENT'S ABILITY LEVEL AND LEARNING
READINESS
-
ADJUSTING QUESTIONS SO THAT THEY ARE TARGETED TOWARDS A CHILD'S ABILITY LEVEL
-
PROVIDING ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH OR
HAVE MASTERED CURRICULUM CONTENT.
-
FLEXIBLE GROUPING FOR STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE VARYING PROFICIENCY LEVELS
CROSS- CURRICULUM.
-
USING LEARNING CENTERS TO PROMOTE ACTIVITIES THAT INCORPORATE VARIED LEVELS OF
COMPLEXITY.
-
PAIRING STUDENTS WITH VARYING READING SKILLS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITES FOR
CROSS-LEVEL INTERACTIONS.
|
In addition to
classroom strategies, a variety of pull-out and small group services are used
to meet students' specific learning needs.
SERVICES
PROVIDED BY OUR SCHOOL INCLUDE...
-
2 to 4 hours of daily ESL instruction for English Language Learners
-
Resource services for those students identified with specific learning
disabilities
-
Ak Chin Tutoring for those students who qualify for services
-
Title I services for those students identified as "AT RISK" for not meeting
their grade-level standards.
|
And finally, in an
effort to meet the needs of ALL of my students, it is imperative that a plan
is in place to address the unique and special needs of those students with
extremely high cognitive abilities and/or extraordinary talents.
SPECIFIC
ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO ENRICH THE CURRICULUM INCLUDE...
-
PARTICIPATION IN A CLASSROOM READING CLUB CALLED THE D-BACK READERS. STUDENTS
WILL BE CHALLENGED TO UTILIZE HIGHER LEVEL THINKING SKILLS (BLOOM'S TAXONOMY)
IN THEIR DISCUSSION GROUP. LITERATURE PIECES WILL INCLUDE STORIES FROM THEIR
ANTHOLOGIES, CHAPTER BOOKS, AND POETRY.
-
THE USE OF "VERTICAL ENRICHMENT" ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND
WHAT IS COVERED IN THE GRADE-LEVEL CURRICULUM.
-
THE USE OF INDEPENDENT PROJECT ACTIVITIES TO HELP DEVELOP THEIR CREATIVITY.
THEY WILL EXPLORE TOPICS OF INTEREST AND PRESENT THE INFORMATION IN A MANNER
OF THEIR CHOOSING.
