Monkey Business

As parents, we often hear the saying, "kids will be kids." Even though it is important to take a child's youthful and rambunctious nature into consideration, I also believe that every student is capable of having positive interactions and displaying good behavior at school.

I will be using praise, recognition, rewards, and special privledges to encourage your child to do his/her very best. In addition, your child will become familiar with a classroom card system which will be used to support and monitor classroom behavior.

In order to keep things fun, the card system is refered to as "Monkey Business". Each child will be given a series of colored cards. Each colored card indicates a specific behavior level. The highest level is "green" and it means that your child is "GOOD TO GO". Every child will start each day with his/her "green animal card" showing. Should an inappropriate behavior occur, the following card changes will take place.

  1. "Yellow animal card"- This card will be displayed if your child has ignored a warning and continued an inappropriate behavior. This is considered a first offense. He/she will receive an informal talk regarding the behavior and lose 5 minutes of recess.
  2. "Orange animal card"- This card will be displayed if your child has a second offense. He/she will be sent to a designated area in the room to reflect on the behavior and will lose 10 minutes of recess.
  3. "Red animal card"- This card will be displayed if your child has a third offense. He/she will be sent to a neighboring 1st grade room and will copy "good behavior" sentences prior to returning back to the classroom. He/she will miss the whole recess and a note will go home to the parents.
  4. "No animal cards"- This means that your child's behavior has not improved despite continued warnings and consequences. Your child will be sent to the principal's office and there will be a phone call home. PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY SERIOUS OR VIOLENT OFFENSE WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC TRIP TO THE PRINCIPAL.
