A Note from Mr. Gibson
As the 2009-2010 school year begins, I wanted to start the year
with a brief note giving you some background information about me.
I received my Bachelor’s Degree, in Secondary Education with the
focus on Social Studies, from Ottawa University, and my Master’s
Degree, in Curriculum and Instruction, from Northern Arizona University.
I am currently state-certified to teach K-12.
This is the start of my 20th year of teaching. My years of
experience include: eighth grade history (at Kyrene Middle School),
fourth grade (at Monte Vista Elementary in the Kyrene District, sixth
grade (at Shumway Elementary and Basha Elementary, in Chandler), fifth
grade (at Kyrene de la Colina, also in Kyrene), as well as several 4/5
combination classes (also at Colina), and most recently, the start of my
fourth year here at Maricopa Wells Middle School.
As for my family, I have been married for 26+ years to my wife,
Bonnie, who is also in the education field. She is the current principal
(starting her fourth year) at Maricopa Elementary School (Alterra
subdivision campus) in this district. We have a 25 year old son, Ken,
who is completing his education at ASU (Go, Devils!). He is currently
enrolled in Film Production, working toward the day when he can make
movies for the "big screen".
On a personal note, I am an avid reader, with a strong preference
for history. I love sports and coaching sports (I am on the coaching
staff for the Middle School football team this year with the greatest
group of coaches-GO PANTHERS! Then I will go on to share coaching
duties on the girls' and boys' basketball teams!). I enjoy watching
movies, playing with my dogs (we have two Jack Russells-whew!),and, most
of all, teaching.
Teaching offers what no other job does- every year I get to teach
a new group of students, with different interests, strengths, habits, etc.
It is this yearly change that keeps the work exciting for me. Continuing
from last year, I am part of the "D" cohort team (the Dream Team),
including: Mrs. Branchik, Mrs. Rice, Mr. Miller, and Mr. Szoltysik. This
will allow all the teachers in this group to work with the same student
base, making continuity of instruction and support for each student
stronger. This will help each student in immeasurable ways! This year I
am truly looking forward to working with your child, and, together, we will
all have a successful 2009-2010 experience!
It is my professional mission to assure the healthy development of every
child so that each has the knowledge, skills, and resiliency to be
successful in a rapidly changing world through the kind of learning that
establishes meaningful connections for the learner.
I wish to find the "key" to each child's success and help them unlock
the possibilities that lie inside each of them.
