6th Grade Social Studies

6TH GRADE OCTOBER HOMEWORK

DIRECTIONS: For the month of November, students will be focusing on two different projects for homework. Both assignments will be due on 11/30/09. Students will choose from one written option as well as one creative option.

WRITTEN OPTIONS:

OPTION #1 – Write a report on Confucianism, Mencius, and Daoism. Research all three of these ideas and present them in a five paragraph report. Describe when these ways of thought were created, how they have influenced Chinese history and culture, list their main principles, and how these principles are still in practice today, in China as well as the rest of the world.

OPTION #2 – Describe China's different dynasties by writing a letter to a historical figure from the Han Dynasty and the Qin Dynasty. Pose questions and share your feelings about events that occurred during these dynasties to the figure you chose. Also share information regarding important crops, artifacts, and people from these periods in your letters.

OPTION #3 – Using the three climographs on pages 104 and 105 in the textbook, create a packing list as if you were going to travel to all of these three locations. Create a list that takes into account the month of trip and the weather conditions. Plan each trip for a different time of the year and adjust your packing list accordingly. Also, do research to include some tourist locations and the various types of dress that would be necessary for the different locations you will be visiting on your trip.

CREATIVE OPTIONS:

OPTION #1 – Create a family scrapbook of the construction of the Great Wall of China. Pretend that generations of your family have participated in the construction. Include any information you can about the cost, the length of time spent on construction, the location of the wall, the size of the wall, any accidents, and any other information you find in your research. Be sure to include captions for each entry and pictures. This should be a minimum of 10 pages.

OPTION #2 – Create a quiz show (like the game we play on the computer) comparing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages between Nomadic and Farming lifestyles. Use information located in lesson 1 to create your quiz show. This can be a PowerPoint, or a board game format. Be sure to have at least 10 questions in your quiz show.

OPTION #3 – Create postcards with pictures on one side, and a message on the other of various landforms found in China. Create a postcard for at least five different areas of China. Pretend you are there and write a brief message on the opposite side of the postcard to a friend or family member back in the states describing in detail the area.
