WELCOME TO MS.
FRANKEL'S 6th GRADE READING CLASS!
Textbook: Elements of Literature
Each day you will need to bring a
3-ring binder and/or folder to class to organize your materials, as well as
your reading notebook, pencils, and agenda.
Homework:
Each night you will be
responsible for reading a book of your choice for at least 20 minutes. You
will complete a reading log weekly for a homework grade. The reading log will
include the date, name of the book, page numbers that you read, and a short
summary of the story. Please choose a book at your appropriate reading level.
Book Reports:
Each reading student will
complete a book report every quarter. The book for your book report MUST be
approved by Ms. Frankel before it is completed and turned in.
Due Dates for Book Reports
Quarter 1 – Due no later than
September 18th
Quarter 2 – Due no later than
December 4th
Quarter 3 – Due no later than
February 19th
Quarter 4 – Due no later than
May 13th
Due dates for book reports are
MANDATORY. Book reports turned in late will not be scored in time for report
cards, resulting in an incomplete grade for that quarter.
Vocabulary:
There will be vocabulary words
that correspond to the story in the literature book. You will have a weekly
vocabulary quiz in which you will demonstrate your knowledge of the definition
of the word and be able to spell it correctly.
Spelling:
There will be a list of
approximately 15-20 spelling words on the board every Monday. You are
responsible for your master list each week. You will need to write your
spelling words 3 times each in cursive for homework due Tuesday. We will also
do spelling activities in class to assist you before each test. There will be
a spelling test every Friday.
In reading class we will be
working with all types of literary genres including fiction, nonfiction,
folktales, poetry, and drama. We will also be reading some novels as a class,
and doing some small group literature studies as well.
I am excited and looking forward
to a great year!
