Homework

Spelling
Each week you will study a new list of 20 core words plus 5 challenge words.
On Monday, you will be given a “pretest” on the words. If you get all of the
20 core words correct on the pretest, you are done with spelling for the
week. Also, if you get any of the challenge words correct, they are worth ½
point extra credit each, so it is possible that you could get a spelling test
score of 22.5/20!
If you do not get all of the 20 core words correct on the pretest, you will
be given extra practice during the week and then have the opportunity to take
the spelling test again on Friday. The extra practice comes in the form of
writing each misspelled word five times each and using the words to complete
a spelling packet.
Please do not feel that having to do the extra practice and take another test
is a punishment. It is not. I feel that if, on Monday, you can prove to me
that you have mastered the spelling of the words for the week, I am not going
to make you practice the words more. If you have not mastered the words on
the pretest given Monday, I want you to be successful at mastering every word
on Friday.
Also, we will chart our spelling test scores each week so you can see your
progress and set realistic spelling goals.

Handwriting-Each week we will practice the art of producing neatly-written
cursive.

Accelerated Reader-Language Arts students are required to be reading at
least 20 minutes each night at home. Each student will have the opportunity
to earn 5 extra credit points if they turn in reading chart signed by their
parents each month. Students are to be reading AR books and
their AR points must be met by Mid-May. Each student has been given a
specific AR point goal based on their reading level.

We are really excited about the two new reading incentive programs we have.
Every Thursday students listen to a passage from a particular book, and if
they guess the correct book, they may win a prize. Also on Fridays,
students can spend the AR points they have earned.
