Homework

6th Grade/8th Grade:

This page will be to keep you updated predominantly on long term homework
assignments. For daily homework, please check your child's planner.

6th grade:

Now that the How To DAP is completed, the students will begin a letter writing
unit. We will start with friendly letters and the students will have to write
2 different friendly letters, one for practice and one for a DAP. Once that
has culminated, we will begin learning business letters. That will also
consist of two assignments, one practice, one DAP. There will be considerably
more work involved in the business letter section. We will begin our letter
writing unit on Monday, November 16th.

The business letter DAP will not be assigned until after Winter Break. I felt
that the students were going to be short-changed if I hurried the unit to fit
it into first semester, so we will work on the notes and a practice letter to
Mrs. Silman or Mrs. Carlon the week of 12/07. This letter will be about
something that the students would like the principals to know; something that
is great about school that they should continue or something that they feel
should be changed. The focus of the letter is correct business letter format,
formal, respectful tone to the recipient, and the ability to stay on and
support a topic or statement.

Once the practice letters are completed, the students will work on various
packets containing word searches, logic problems, word puzzles, etc.

I will no longer accept late book reports or test corrections for 1st
semester after Tuesday, Dec. 15.

8th grade:

8th graders are finished with their compare and contrast essays on Poe. They
did a great job with a very difficult concept!

Now we will begin writing letters. First they will be asked to review the
parts of and write a friendly letter. They will do one practice letter and one
for their DAP. Then we will move on to business/persuasive letters. This too
should be a review and will culminate in a business letter DAP test. This
test will commence after our return from Winter Break. I wanted the students
to have ample time for review as well as to have the ability to review this
concept after break and before moving on to something new, since business
letter concepts/format are often found on the state assessments (AIMS). The
week of 12/14, the students will be working on review of grammar and sentence
structure.

8th graders also have weekly vocab packet due on Thursdays with a quiz every
Friday. They will be required to use new vocabulary words in their writing
assignments.

Please remember that reading responses are due every Friday. The students
should be reading a minimum of 5-10 pages a night. Their reading responses
should be at least 2-3 summaries, depending on the length of the chapters
read.

I will no longer accept late reading responses or test corrections for 1st
semester after Tuesday, Dec. 15.
