Expository Essay (BIOGRAPHY)

You need a web & a rough draft that should be at

least 3-5 paragraphs hand written.

§  You may choose to interview an adult of your choice

(a list of choices will be given to help you choose)

§  You may do a face to face interview or a phone interview

§  Use the questions given to you & you may add your own

1st use the information from your interview questions to create a web.

2nd use your web to write your rough draft.

§  You also have the opportunity to choose a celebrity, author, inventor, etc to research instead of an adult interview. You are to research information to create a web & rough draft about the person you choose.

Final Draft of an Adventure Story.  The adventure story should be at least 3-5 paragraphs typed or nicely hand written.  Reference back to last weeks weekend homework below for criteria you should follow.

Rough draft of an Adventure Story

An adventure story is one in which the main character(s) face a challenge situations in order to reach a goal. Choose from one of the topics given & your story should be at least 3-5 paragraphs. Remember to have the following in your story:

·         Main character(s) (detailed description)

·         Setting(this is where most of the action takes place)

·         Time (when the story takes place; past, present, future?)

·         Plot (the challenge your main character must confront or overcome)

·         Theme (what your character should grow & learn from his/her experience)

·         Climax (your story should get more exciting as the story builds up and unfolds.

·         Conclusion (tying up all the loose pieces and winding your story down)

Your child is to write or type their FINAL DRAFT of the story they wrote last weekend. The topic was to write a kid friendly spooky story. Stories need to have a strong beginning, middle, & end. I am expecting final drafts to be well constructed with good use of details, voice, and word choice.

Topic: Writing a conclusion

1. Students are to take their intro & body paragraphs from last week’s weekend writing and now begin writing their conclusion paragraph on the following topic: Why should we recycle aluminum cans and glass bottles?.

2. Your conclusion paragraph should contain the following:

·  Restating your thesis-don’t repeat it word for word

·  Briefly summarize the main points of your essay

·  Adding a surprising fact of a great quotation can add zing to the conclusion

·  Leave an impression on the reader

1.  Students are to take their Thesis from last week’s weekend writing and begin writing their introduction and body paragraphs on the following topic: Why should we recycle aluminum cans and glass bottles?. Remember the thesis is part of the introduction paragraph.

2.  Your introduction and body paragraphs should contain the following:

·             Your introduction should grab/hook your reader.

·             You should attempt to start your essay with a quote, a question, or a piece of startling information.

·             In the introduction, include the points for discussion in the same order that you will discuss them in the body.

·             Your body paragraph(s) should include details that support the main points that were listed in your introduction.

Students are to write a brainstorming list of benefits of recycling.  Then they'll need to create a thesis statement (few senteces long) using the questionnaire they'll receive in class.

Students are to write a final draft of last weeks paragraph. This will prepare students for proof reading and editing.

Students are to take their topic from last weeks weekend writing (brainstorming chart) and write a paragraph.  This will prepare students for proof reading and editing.

8/21/09

§        1 worksheet “What Am I” explaining different types of paragraphs. Your child is to read the 4 paragraphs on the worksheet and determine what type of paragraph it is by looking at the resource web on the back of the worksheet.

§        Brainstorming chart of a specific topic your child has chosen, needs to be completed in your child’s writing notebook.

A sample chart has been handed out and should be in your child’s communication folder showing what a brainstorming chart should or could look like.
