Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a wonderful break. This
semester we will be incorporating new activities in our classroom and at
home. Please read the following.
Writing Workshop: We will be starting writer’s workshop next week (in class).
During this time students will brainstorm, organize, write, edit, illustrate
and publish their very own stories. The students love to create their own
books and share them with the class. Tomorrow in your child’s book baggie
will be an “idea” sheet for you to fill out with your child. In addition to
this form please send in a copy of 10 pictures that your child can use for
writing ideas.
Take-Home Comprehension: Every Tuesday and Thursday night (beginning this
Thursday) your child will need to fill out a comprehension form in their book
baggie. Your child will need to read the book in his/her baggie and verbally
answer the comprehension questions. The only writing your child will need to
do will be to write the title, date and five new or interesting words from
the book. As your child discusses the book with you, color in the happy face
and then initial the bottom of the page. This activity will only take a few
minutes and can really help your child with his/her reading comprehension.
Raz-Kids.com: This is a wonderful reading website that your child can visit
at home. Each child in our class already has his/her own account. At this
site students can read a book (at their own level) and answer comprehension
questions. Your children have already visited and are familiar with this site
(they visit it often in the computer lab). Please look in your child’s book
baggie on Wednesday for the site address and directions. Your child should
visit this site a few times a week, read at least two books per visit, and
take the quiz.
Report Cards: Report cards will go home this Friday in your child’s yellow
homework folder. Please remove the report card, sign and return the
envelope in the yellow folder. THANKS!
Science Club: Date change for first grade- cancelled on Monday, Jan. 11 and
rescheduled for - Wednesday, Jan. 20th. THANK YOU!
