Homework

First grade homework begins with reading for the Wranglin' Reader Program.
Nightly reading begins the first day of school. Time spent reading
together, parents reading to children, and first grade students reading
alone, all count toward time on the Wranglin' Reader sheets. Your child's
reading sheets should be initialed and turned in about every four and a half
weeks, which turns out to be 20 hours per nine weeks. Your child should
have 80 hours or more by the end of April, in order to qualify for the
elementary end-of-the-year Wranglin' Reader celebration!

Your child will begin writing a daily sentence, using the first 25 of 100
first grade words, on August 24th. This homework will go home in your
child's Friday folder on August 24th and is due the following Friday.
Please encourage your child to use his/her own spelling in the sentences,
with the core words spelled correctly. This writing homework will continue
for four weeks until we begin our Spelling Words/Paragraph homework on
September 17th. You can find the 100 words list in our "Documents" link.

The following is the Spelling Homework for the entire school year. Spelling
tests will be given on Fridays. The first test will be on September 22nd.
Each spelling list has five core words and a short paragraph. In order to
receive an "O", your child must spell all five core words correctly and have
five or less errors on the entire spelling paragraph. In order to receive
an "S", your child must spell all of the core words correctly. Missing one
core word results in an "S-" whether or not the rest of the paragraph is
correct. The priority for spelling is mastery of the core words, which are
the first one hundred words in reading.
