Syllabus

I.	Course Description

SS21 WORLD HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY I – Fall 1/2 credit
This course traces history from ancient Greece to the Reformation. 
Influences on civilization will be traced and defined. Problems and 
conflicts of civilizations will be analyzed and explained. Students will 
also use geographic tools and research skills to analyze geographic 
information about people, places and environments. 
SS22 WORLD HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY II - Spring 1/2 credit
SS22 traces history from the Age of Exploration in the 1500’s to modern 
world movements toward independence in Africa, India, and SE Asia. Areas of 
civilization changes will be located and identified. Influences on 
civilization will be traced and defined. Problems and conflicts of modern 
civilization will be analyzed and explained. Proper use of geographic tools 
and research skills will be reinforced American History I SS34 (1790-1919)

II.	Materials/Class Activities 
TEXT: WORLD HISTORY: Patterns of Interaction   1st Edition
McDougal Littell
SUPPLIES: 3 ring notebook, loose leaf paper, pen or pencil, colored pencils, 
markers or crayons and a folder (folder to remain in class) are required. 
ACTIVITIES: Lecture/Note taking, Class Discussion, Map Work, Group Work (2-5 
people), tests, Reading Assignments, Student Presentations, Audio-Visual 
presentations

III.	Grades
Grades are based on accumulative points for class work, homework, tests, 
quizzes and projects. The quarter grade will be determined by adding up all 
the points earned and dividing by the total points possible. The resulting 
grade will be given a letter grade based on the Mesa Public Schools’ grading 
policy. The semester grade will be based on the first quarter grade, second 
quarter grade, and the final exam.
90 - 100% = A
80 - 89 % = B
70 - 79 % = C
60 - 69 % = D
0 - 59 % = Fail 
Grades are not "rounded up"

IV.	Attendance and Homework
A.	All work must include your name (both first and last), date and 
period.  All work must be done in blue or black ink.   Late work will not be 
accepted, except for excused absence. 
Sweep Tardy Policy - If you are swept the day an assignment is due, you MUST 
turn it in to the responsibility room host. If you ditch (do not go to the 
responsibility room), you will forfeit the assignment. If you are swept the 
day of a test, you MUST come and see me by 1:00 P.M. of that day and make-up 
the test at that time. If not, you will have an essay test make-up. You will 
have THREE days to take the essay make-up. If you ditch (do not go to the 
responsibility room), you will forfeit the test.
B.	Incomplete homework will not be accepted for credit. Late work will 
receive half credit (50%) on the first day late and no credit after that.
C.	Make-up (verified absence where the parent reports the absence 
within one day) you will have one (1) day for each day absent to turn in 
make-up work.
D.	Tests usually cover at least two weeks of study.  In the event that 
a student is absent the day before a test, that student will still take the 
test upon returning to class.  Final Exams will not be rescheduled to 
accommodate family vacations. Your daily attendance is important and perfect 
or near perfect attendance is highly recommended!
E.	Audit: Students with 10+ absences are in audit status.

V.	Class Policies
A.	Student is to come to class prepared to participate. This involves 
having your textbook, 3 ring notebook, assignment calendars, completed 
homework and proper attitude. Student must have his or her school ID with 
them in order to leave the room with a pass from Mr. Hill.
B.	School attendance and dress code policies will be enforced. 
Electronic devices such as pagers, cell phones, palm pilots, calculators, CD 
players, etc. are not allowed to be in sight or used and are to be kept in 
your back pack. If it causes a disruption it will be confiscated and given 
to an administrator.
C.	No food or candy is to be eaten in the classroom. First offense - 
you will be asked to put it away. After first offense the food or candy will 
be introduced to the trash can.  Gum chewing will be allowed - popping of 
gum will NOT be allowed - first offense, a warning. After the first offense 
gum will also be introduced to the trash can. If gum is found stuck on the 
floor, walls, under the desk or anywhere else, besides your mouth, this 
privilege will be revoked. No food, candy or drinks in class.
D.	You are expected to be alert, awake and attentive and ready to 
learn. Remain focus and alert in class.  If you are feeling ill, ask to go 
to the nurse.  
E.	Be polite to each individual in the class. The study of history and 
current events invites discussion of different points of view. When 
expressing your opinions or beliefs do so in a manner that is respectful of 
you and to others.
F.	Discipline will be handled on an individual basis. This may include 
a verbal warning, individual conference, parental contact or referral to 
administration.
G.	Homework assignments will be given weekly with due dates posted. You 
are required to fill in an assignment calendar and grade sheet each quarter. 
Reading of textbook and completing homework assignments are required.

VI.	Teacher Availability
A.	If any questions arise, Coach Hill may be reached at 480-472-3084.  
Parents are encouraged to make note of this number and call as needed.  
Mornings is the best time to reach me.  I coach sports and will be busy in 
the afternoons from 1:15 PM and on. Also, I can be reached by email 
whill@mpsaz.org   Students are encouraged to seek extra help before school. 
I will arrange my schedule to meet with students as necessary.
