On Thursday, February 3rdstudents hosted a Memoir Writing Celebration. They invited members, past teachers, and peers to attend the celebration. Guests read the many student memoirs and commented about that they read. It was a HUGE success. We had 18 teachers, 11 parents, and 9 classrooms attend. The students were elated by the turnout and were so proud to share their memoirs with all these people. Click the link to see a few pictures from that day.

Within the next few weeks Pizzo will be installing Hydro-Stackers. This is a hydroponic method of growing fruits and vegetables. Fourth graders will be learning about growing produce and materials the earth provides to make it possible. Water and energy conservation will also be a focus. Over the next five months students will watch seeds germinate and then become edible vegetables and fruits. Be looking for more information about this exciting project on the classroom website and in your child’s green folder.

The pictures below show an example of what some of the materials will look like once they are installed.

Before you throw away this year’s Christmas cards, please consider donating them to my class. We reuse them to make all kinds of crafts. Simple tear off the side of the card with the message, then save the front of the card that has the picture. Thank you for all your support! Below you can see some of the neat crafts we can make!

With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, we think it is important for the students to have an understanding and appreciation for our nation’s history. For the next two weeks we will be learning about the history of Thanksgiving and different Thanksgiving traditions that families practice. On Friday, November 18th, we will be celebrating different traditions by bringing in a dish that our families have during Thanksgiving. We want a variety of foods, so desserts, appetizers and entrees are all acceptable dishes to bring in. If there is a family recipe or a story behind the dish, please bring that in to share too. Have your child bring the dish in a plastic container to the classroom the morning of. If you have any questions contact Mrs. VanVaerenbergh.

Congrats to my Science Olympic champions! On Friday, October 14th my morning and afternoon science classes competed in the 2011 Catapult Science Olympics competition. All the contestants did a fabulous job designing their very own catapults, but two groups stood out from the rest.

Edwin and Jesus launched their marshmallow a shocking 1,330cm. WAY TO GO BOYS!

Sienna and Mya impressed everyone! They designed a catapult that launched their marshmallow 1,790cm. VERY IMPRESSIVE!

CHAMPIONS: AM Group – Edwin and Jesus

PM Group – Mya and Sienna
