Question No. 2 - Paper is important in this story. Example 1 - Each person on the ship is allowed to bring just one book. After a few weeks, people start trading books because there are none on the new planet Shine. Example 2 - After the wheat comes in, the grown-ups need a way to keep track of who gets how much wheat but they do not have any paper. So, they want Pattie to give them her blank book, but Pattie doesn't want to. In the end, her father takes it and finds it is not blank. Pattie used the books as a diary to write about the experinces on the planet Shine.

1: The goal was to live on the new planet called shine. They met their goal because they found the sap, grew the wheat and found that it was safe, found life on shine, and stared a colony on a new plant.

Question 1 - Their goal was to find a new planet to live on and be able to thrive. I think they met their goal because they were able to grow food, find water and get along with each other. It seemed like they had a future on Shine.

Q1. The goal of the people was to survive and build a stable colony. They met their goals because they had the main survival goals reached. They found out what they could eat, they built houses, they found out about the inhabitants of the planet, they got a reliable light source, found out how to cut down trees, and learned about the size and shape of the planet.

Michael D. - I agree with you on Question 1. Also, by discovering the tree candy and by growing the wheat the people had a food source in order to live and meet their goals too on planet Shine.

Paper was very valuable because books were made of paper and books are rare on Shine. They only brought 1 book per person from Earth. They can not make paper from the trees on Shine which would let them make more books. It as good that Pattie was able to write a book about their journey to Shine because they might not be able to remember it later on.

Paper was very important on Shine because it was their only entertainment and source of information in the form of books. Everyone going to Shine could bring only one book. On the spacship after everyone finished their book, they traded with someone else and read their book. Pattie would not trade her book but father made her trade with Joe and Sarah. They made fun of her becuase her book was blank but they didn't realize it was the only paper thy would have on the new planet and in the end became The Green Book. That is why paper was very important.

1: Their goal was to survive on planet Shine because earth is in danger. Yes, they met their goal because you need food, water, shelter and air to survive. They had all of that but it was tough because there wasn't much other life. They used what they had like jellyfish for lamps and survived!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question Two: Paper seems to be in short supply throughout the story. Paper is important because there is a greater demand than supply. The green book serves as a historical record about Shine, the refugees and their experiences on the new planet, such as the moth people and the jellyfish.

Claire, good point about paper being valuable because it is in short supply. Do you think that is most important or that it helps them remember their early experiences on Shine? Lucas-Great answer! Be sure to give specific examples of food, because that was the one thing that they almost didn't have. Sophie-good point highlighting the importance of entertainment and paper. Were there other uses? Excellent ideas Megan! I like that you thought about the future of paper and that they might not make more.
