Where does water go when it rains?

For Pennsylvania, the annual precipitation ranges from 30 to 60 inches per year with a mean rainfall of approximately 42 inches. Of this approximately, 22 inches or more is returned to the atmosphere via transpiration or evaporation, 13 inches infiltrates into the groundwater system, and direct runoff accounts for approximately 7 inches of water.

Where is the underground water in Pennsylvania?

An underground water source is called an aquifer. There are a number of aquifer sources in PA. Some of them are used for drinking water, irrigation, etc. Here's a map of PA aquifers:

How did water originally come to Earth?

We've learned in class that Earth's water is recycled over and over, but where did it originally come from? What it here when the earth formed? Where? Did it come later? Turns out there are a lot of different theories out there! Here are links to a couple interesting ones. The scientists are still gathering evidence for these ideas. Which one do you like?

Water has many forms!

Water can exist as a solid, a liquid or a gas. It can be found in the atmosphere, on the ground, and under the ground. Here are just a few videos that capture some of water's more fascinating moments!

hydrosphere

The hydrosphere is all the water on Earth, including all the bodies of water, and all the weather. Which do you prefer - going to the ocean, going to a lake or going to a river or stream? Why? What about weather? Do you prefer snow or rain? Why?
