Hoover Dam

Some of you were curious about how a dam is built - especially what they do with the water when they're building! Here's a "vintage" film about the building of Hoover Dam in the 1930's. If you want the answer to the water question, fast forward to about 4 minutes in.

Where do we use hydroelectric power?

Here's a fairly recent map of the U.S. showing where hydroelectric power is generated. Do you notice any patterns?

To learn why there are so many hydroelectric plants in Tennessee, check out this link: Who started the TVA?
And how does the U.S production compare to other nations? Here's a graph I found that might help you answer that question:

Wind energy around the world

Some of you were wondering how much wind energy was used in other parts of the world. Here's a map I found at green chip stocks

Another question that came up was the fastest recorded wind speed in the world. Check this article out to learn more: New World Record Wind Speed
And some of you wondered about wind power in Pennsylvania. There's a nice map of wind farm locations in Pennsylvania in this article from wikipedia:

Working on a wind turbine

Here's a video that follows a wind turbine technician as he climbs inside a wind turbine. What do you think of his job? Would you be interested in having a job like that?

Wind Energy: pro and con

Although wind energy has advantages, it has disadvantages too. Check out this video about citizens of Wisconsin who are unhappy with giant wind turbines in their backyards!

Make a pinwheel!

Some of you asked about the pinwheel I made in class to show how a turbine works. Here's a site that gives you instructions for how to make one, and I've also included the picture that I used to help me.

Take a virtual tour of a power plant

This link takes you to a virtual power plant. You can learn about the fuel, the water, and the power that the plant makes. There are even some games to test your skill!
