You wouldn't believe what I found this morning!
As I was checking in books this morning I came across something special!
Some kids had returned a Jon Scieszka book and I saw this:

    Look Closely...

It has the author's autograph inside!

It is Jon Scieszka's autograph! Who is that? Second grade is learning about him this week and if you want to know more also, see the post below!

Author Jon Scienszka and Illustrator Lane Smith won the Caldecott Honor Medal in 2004 for their work in the book, The Stinky Cheese Man.
Scieszka's work is humorous and fun for readers with a little more understanding of humor and sarcasm. Smith's illustrations bring the books to life and create a joyful reading experience for the young and old. Scieszka also won the Bluebonnet award in 1997 for the book Math Curse.

    Storybook Parade
Mark your calendars for October 28th!!!

Students are invited to wear costumes that show their love for books. Those wearing a costume that resembles a character in a book and carrying that book on October 28th will be able to march in the Storybook Parade.

To help encourage the love of books and reading, it would benefit the students if they have read the book or have had the book read to them from which their character comes.  Then they can share their story with their classmates.

A few ideas for costumes could include Junie B. Jones, the mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Thing One/Thing Two from The Cat in the Hat, and Lily from Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse.  Your favorite books are a great place to start!

Please note:  This is the same day as our Great Pumpkin parties.

Please do not send your child in costume on that day without the matching book.

The parade will take place before the parties begin!

This week and last we had the opportunity to hear former Friendswood teacher and author, Debbie Spurr. She shared her new book, Where Do Butterflies Go When it Rains? as well as information on the writing and publishing process. Kindergarten through third grade enjoyed presentations at Westwood and fourth grade learned about the writing process.

    Thank you Debbie Spurr!
