    Learning Target: I can define the term author's purpose and provide examples of forms of media that fit into common authors' purpose categories.

    After discussing author's purpose, we continued with our journal routine for Freak the Mighty.

    Learning Targets:

    I can define the term tone and describe a short text's tone. I can take effective notes foscusing on main ideas.

    Today, we read a paragraph that explained tone. Students identified the main ideas in that passage and we took notes. Students will be tested on what tone is.

    Then, we continued our reading response journal routine. Students are reading at their own pace, and doing our journal routine for every two chapters that they read. Some classes had several students who wanted to read aloud, so we read aloud in small groups.

    Learning Target: I can explain how my thinking has changed.

    Periods 1 and 5: I can analyze summaries and describe their strengths and weaknesses.

    We read chapters 4-5 of Freak the Mighty and began our journal routine, which is:
    -a 3 sentence summary of what we read
    -completing this sentence stem: I used to think _______, but now I think _____ because_________.

    1st and 5th periods got back the reading test  The Brave Knight. We looked at summaries and analyzed their strengths and weaknesses. The test is divided into four standards. If students didn't show their ability to meet a standard on the test they need to retest that standard during pride lunch. Grades for that test are posted on ESIS. The four standards are: summary, main idea, theme, and vocabulary.

    Learning Target: I can analyze the story elements through the lens of "point of view."

    Students read chapters 2 and 3 of Freak the Mighty. They had a set of questions to answer about the chapter. Then, they met in small groups to discuss their answers and fill in a chart analyzing Freak, Grim, Max's room, and Max through the lens of point-of-view, which is also a story element.

    Homework was not assigned.

    Today we reviewed main idea (in fiction texts) and theme.

    Students practiced their summary skills by writing a summary of the first chapter of Freak the Mighty.

    Then, students took a short assessment on these skills that all 6th graders in the district are taking.

    Freak the Mighty Chapter 1 Summary

    In the first chapter of Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, we meet Max, the narrator of the story. At the beginning of the chapter, Max remembers back to the first time that he met Freak, back when they were both really little. Freak would hit people with his crutches and braces, while Max kicked kids with his feet. Max was living with his grandparents because his mother had passed away. The text implies that it Max’s father might have had something to do with the death of his mother. The chapter ends with Max remembering back to when Freak moved down the street during the summer before eighth grade.

    Learning Target: I can analyze the characters of a story.

    We read the first chapter of the novel Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick. We analyzed the characters by gathering information about them in the text and by making inferences supported in the text.

    There is no homework.

    On Monday/Tuesday, students will take a district wide reading assessment that will assess their ability to write a summary and define vocabulary in context. They will also have to define theme and main idea.

    We are continuing to explore theme. We are looking for theme in familiar stories and then trying to idenfity it in more challenging stories.

    We are concentrating on defining theme and identifying it in familiar stories. 

    The theme of a story is the truth that it reveals about life, or the lesson or message that the author wants you to take away.

    There is no new homework. If I haven't received a final draft of the narrative assignment, I need it!
