Should we try to speak in English at home?
Definitely NOT at the very beginning! When students are learning a new language, it's important that they are strong in their native language first. In addition, it's really trying to have to struggle in a new language all day and then have to go home to do the same. They need some time to recuperate and be comfortable at home. After they start to speak English at home by themselves, it's okay to encourage it.Back to Top

Why does my son learn a new language so much faster than my daughter?
Every child has their own individual strengths and intelligences so their abilities will vary. Identify your child's strengths and use these to help them learn the language. (See Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner for more information)Back to Top

What can I do at home to assist my child's language learning?
The number one thing to do is READ! Reading aloud is a great way to connect with your child. It doesn't have to be in English. If you read to them in their own language, you're strengthening their primary language which helps them to learn another. Also, they will pick up on your intonation and rhythm so be sure to be expressive.Back to Top
