    Hello students and parents,

Congratulations on finishing one-third of 6th grade and one-ninth of middle school!!!  I appreciate your hard work this first trimester and look forward to seeing your continued growth during the rest of the school year.  Here are a few things to be aware of as we begin the second trimester:

    Math
During the second trimester, students will be given two opportunities to show their knowledge of new topics introduced in trimester 2.  New concepts will include Equations (E), Inequalities, Rational Numbers (G), Ratios and Rates (F), and the Coordinate Plane (H).  Students will have one opportunity (each) to show their knowledge of trimester 1 concepts (Tests A-D).  To give students and parents more of a heads up about upcoming tests, I will be writing the upcoming test dates at the bottom of the current week's Planbook.

    Science
Just wanted to give you a reminder that the Layers of Earth Project is due Thursday, November 21.  The students have been using class time to work on their projects and will have Tuesday and Wednesday to work on them this week.  Please email me if you have any questions.

Thank you again for all that you do!  Let's make trimester 2 another great one!

6th Grade Math and Science parents,
I just wanted to say that it was a pleasure meeting you all at Back to School Night, and I have a couple of updates in regards to online grades, missing assignments, tests, and our class website:
Online Grades: Last Friday (9/6), your child was given an instruction sheet for how to access their grades for all classes. Please make sure that you log in with them for the first time, so you can choose the password when you are prompted to reset the password.
General Instructions and link here: Online Grades

Missing Assignments: All missing assignments (Z scores=0) will be due Friday, September 13. After September 13th, I will not be accepting late work for students who fail to complete their homework. Absent work will need to be turned in to the assignment box within one week of the absence or it will become unexcused. Any time there is a situation that arises that prevents your child from completing homework on time, please send a note with them and they will be excused as if they were absent.
Math Tests: My math testing schedule allows students to have multiple opportunities to show that they understand a topic. So far, we have only tested Topic A: Adding and Subtracting Decimals (from 8/28). Students will be tested again this Friday to allow them to show improvement, and to show retention as well. While both scores will be in the grade book, only the most recent score will go into calculating their grade (Grade will show most current knowledge).
Science Tests: Science tests will consist of three sections: Multiple choice, vocabulary, and essay (short answer). Students will be able to use notes, homework, and study guides on all tests. However, they will not be able to use their vocabulary sheets, so they will need to study the 8-10 vocabulary words each chapter. For the first two chapters, students will be able to make corrections to their tests for additional points. For the remaining chapters, students will receive their original score. The Chapter 1 Test will be returned to the students early this week (Monday or Tuesday). They will be able to make their corrections using their textbooks or any resources they have access to. Each correction will receive half a point for each point they lost.
Class Website: Because of the delay with our district technology department, I have decided to renew my subscription with TeacherWeb. This website will be fully-functional for the entire school year. Once Google for Kids is set up, I will send you more information. It will be used in addition to my current website, but will not replace it this year. Please continue to use the current website (See address at end of email) for the weekly assignment calendar, links to online textbooks, online grades, and lesson videos for select lessons.
Link to lesson video: Dividing Decimals (Subscribe to my YouTube channel to be updated when new videos are posted)
Thank you for your time, and please let me know if you have any questions.
    Have a great day!

    -Jacob Blake

    Dear Students and Parents,

I have decided to continue my subscription with TeacherWeb, so this website will be updated throughout the school year.  Please continue to download the weekly assignments and use the online textbooks linked to this site.  Also, take a minute to check out the "Math Lesson Videos," which can give the students additional note-taking and homework support.  The videos will take the students through the lesson from class with the same examples and practice problems.

It was great meeting you all at Back to School Night!  I look forward to a great year!
