Mo Willems (author of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus) has given us a delightfully funny book in There is a Bird on Your Head!.  Elephant is greatly distressed about the bird that is on his head.  Since Elephant can't see the top of his head, his friend Piggie gives him constant updates about the changing situation.  The illustrations are simple, but give you a very clear idea of exactly how Elephant and Piggie are feeling!  Just when you think everything is fixed a hilarious twist makes you laugh out loud!

    Funny reading to you!

I started reading Regarding the Fountain, because it was listed several places as a book to read if you liked Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  Well, I LOVED Regarding the Fountain!  This creative book is a collection of correspondence between Florence Waters (a famous custom fountain designer) and the 5th grade students of Dry Creek Middle School.  Mrs. Waters in contacted by the school to replace a leaky drinking fountain; but with the help of  Sam N.’s fifth grade students this simple drinking fountain becomes a grandiose endeavor.  The students come to adore “Flo” Waters, as she sends them items to enhance their learning from her travels around the world.  In the midst of designing the fountain, a mystery emerges.  A scandal is afoot and it’s up to the dedicated and determined 5th graders to uncover the truth!  This fabulous book by Kate Klise (AR level 5.8)  is a page-turner from the very beginning!

    Grandiose reading to you!

In Judy Moody & Stink: The Holly Joliday, Stink has his mind on one thing, and one thing only--SNOW!  That's all he wants for Christmas, that's all he thinks about, and that is all he talks about.  He even finds a way to get snow into the tenth annual Holly Jolly Holiday Happening  at Virginia Dare School.  Judy is busy with her own preparatioins for the show, which include everything opposite of snow--palm trees, hawaiian shirts, and a parrot.  How will this year's show turn out?  But more important yet, will Stink get his Christmas wish?  Read this great holiday book to find out!

    Holly Jolly reading to you!

A school cafeteria is never quiet, especially not at Laketon Elementary School; but in No Talking by Andrew Clements that is exactly what happens.  The fifth grade class has long been known as the “unshushables” by all the teachers, and suddenly there is no talking at all—by any of them!  It all starts with Dave Packer and his interest in Ghandi’s days of silence.  The idea grows and grows and suddenly a contest is born.  Boys versus girls—no talking for 2 days—and what happens will surprise everyone!

One of the books nominated for the California Young Reader Medal this year is  Armando and the Blue Tarp School by Edith Hope Fine.  What a heartwarming book of generosity and gratitude--how lucky we are to have such a great school to attend!  The students in Senor David’s class didn’t have a school building.  The students at the colonia of the Tijuana city dump met on a blue tarp each day for their classes.  Armando had to work hard with his family all morning and felt lucky to be able to attend Senor David’s class even for a little bit of time in the afternoon.  When the colonia was destroyed by fire, no one knew what would happen.  But, the generosity of a woman from far away gave the students and their families something they could only dream of!

    Grateful reading to you!

In this delightful new book, the creators of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs introduce us to the towns of Left and Right--and the dotted yellow line that divides them.  But what happens when someone crosses the line, even accidentally? Let the marshmallows fly.  As you read this book, take a good look at all the clever illustrations and details in the story.  It will make you laugh!

Now every time I see a bug I look at it in a whole new way!  After reading Masterpiece by Elise Broach, I wonder what all those bugs are doing running around at night—are they creating reproductions of famous works of art?  Marvin, a beetle, does just that as a gift to his human friend James.  They create a bond as they share the secret of the artist’s identity and they learn to depend on each other as they look for an international art thief!  This is a wonderful book of friendship, mystery and adventure!

If you love to doodle, and watch people, and think of funny little things to say--you will LOVE this book.  I love to do all of those things, and I loved reading about Ellie McDoodle.  Ellie is sent to stay with her cousins and her little brother for a week while her parents are out of town.  She does not like her cousins and thinks this week is going to be a disaster--and to top it all off, they are going camping!  Ellie keeps a little notebook where she records funny thoughts about things she sees and she draws little pictures to go along with her thoughts.  Well writing things down about other people can sometimes get you in trouble, especially when your cousin Eric gets a hold of your notebook.  Ellie has some great adventures, and you will feel like you're right there with her as you read this book!  All the pictures and funny comments in the book make it quick to read and very enjoyable.  There is even a special bonus section at the end where you can learn to draw like Ellie!

    Happy doodling to you!

I love historical fiction!  Crispin: The Cross of Lead  is set in England in the 1300's.  In this Newbery Medal winning book, the main character is Crispin; but he doesn't know his name until after the death of his mother.  His name isn't the only mystery about his life, and this book tells the story of his adventures as he finds out who he really is.  After his mother's death, he hears men talking and he now knows more than he should.  They make him a "wolf's head"--which means anyone can kill him!  With the help of his new friend Bear he tries to avoid capture and sure death as they make their way through the English countryside.  In the aftermath of the plague; they find poverty, death, and destruction!  If you like historical fiction, adventure, and mystery--this is the book for you!
