The best book I read this summer was Before I Fall, by Lauren Oliver.  It was AMAZING! It's about a girl who dies in a car crash, but has to relive the last day of her life over and over and realize the impact her words and actions have on others.  I also read some books that aren't really new, but I just hadn't ever gotten around to reading them.  In this category, I read the entire Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and 13 Little Blue Envelopes

Finally, I read Mockingjay, the third in The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.  I must say, it's my least favorite of the three. I get that the Hunger Games were played out in the Capitol, instead of the arena, and they were "real," but I just felt it was missing some of the excitement.  I thought a lot more could have been done with the time they spent underground, and I really didn't like the way the book left Gale's character.  Overall, I was entertained, but not nearly as much as in The Hunger Games or Catching Fire.

I'd like to start a list of great quotes from books.  Have you ever read a passage of a novel that made you stop and reread, just because it was powerful in some way?  Maybe it clarified the whole novel, maybe it was just great writing, maybe it articulated an emotion you've felt... Whatever the reason, I'd like to hear those fantastic, inspiring words.

    Here's one to start:

"People have stars, but they aren't the same. For travelers, the stars are guides. For other people, they're nothing but tiny lights. And for still others, for scholars, they're problems. For my businessman, they were gold. But all those stars are silent stars. You, though, you'll have stars like nobody else."

    "What do you mean?"

"When you look up at the sky at night, since I'll be living on one of them, since I'll be laughing on one of them, for you, it'll be as if all the stars are laughing. You'll have stars that can laugh!"

    And he laughed again.

"And when you're consoled (everyone is eventually consoled), you'll be glad you've known me. You'll always be my friend. You'll feel like laughing with me. And you'll open your windows sometimes just for the fun of it... And your friends will be amazed to see you laughing while you're looking up at the sky. Then you'll tell them, 'Yes, it's the stars. They always make me laugh!"

This is from The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.  It's simple and sweet, and yet profound.

So, I've finished Brisingr.  So annoyed to have to wait for a fourth book!  This was by far my favorite of the three, although, much like the earlier novels, there were parts I found very formulaic.  What do you think?  As you finish the book, share your thoughts here...

What is the greatest book you've ever read?  How old were you when you read it?  Why is it great?
